What is a solo coulter like? I know you can get a bean coulter but we have drilled direct with the normal tines last few years usually into land that has just been carriered, works ok. One thing i noticed when harvesting spring beans is that there is a slot left in the ground where the tine has been.

It is basically a bean coulter. Imagine your Duett coulter but without the wing underneath, and just a hole directly behind the "knife" tine that dropped seed out directly behind. Pretty much what it is. Goes much deeper than the Duett which I find essential when dealing with crows.

Yes i know what you mean, i beleieve we have a set somwhere as we were going to try osr with it a few years ago but never did in the end!

spring beans planted last year using disc drill notill in mid april once the ground was warm enough
I will be doing the same this year
just because the type of tine /coulter you have works does not mean you have to get it into the field when it is too wet of cold
if planting early gives higher weed burden and then a lower yield is the result

imho at least 50 seeds is needed to get the best yield on my heavy late land

Drilled for the first time with my JD750 this year. Almost all no till apart from shakerating a couple of headlands.

Really pleased with them. I would have liked to have got them a bit deeper at the time but on reflection even the 3.5" I got them worked out fine.

if the soil is heavy 2 inches is deep enough but a small area could have rook problem if they are not controlled
but on a bigger block of heavy land the rooks may help with slugs

How do people establish their beans? Have a Horsche sprinter and would like to hear peoples thoughts?

Same as usual. Get rid of any compaction, then make a hole, pop in seed and cover it up. This for me might be straight in with a home-made cultivator and seeder; move the ground with a big drag then drill with the freeflow. Or it might be plough, cultivate, drill. I don't like to spread springs on and harrow them in.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
