Winter Bean Seeding

We have recently take up a new service for customers in Winter Bean seeding. With pulse crops becoming ever more important within modern day British agriculture since changes in environmental legislation have come in as well as renewed focus on soil health and productivity, farmers and landlords alike are investigating the opportunities around Beans, either in the Winter or the Spring.

We hear some criticism of Pulse crops due to the potential of a lower gross margin however Pulse crops are profitable in their own right, giving gross margins that match, and exceed, other combinable crops. For example, marrowfat peas (£719 GM/ha), blue peas (£714), winter beans (£643) and spring beans (£618) all give gross margins comparable to or well over those of feed wheat (£636 GM/ha), milling wheat (£626), spring malting barley (£526) (All figures quoted are from ‘John Nix Farm Management Pocketbook 2015’). Consider a one pass seeding service to lower establishment costs and profitability of the Winter Bean crop increases further.

With the changes in weather patterns and the unpredictability of Spring conditions, many farmers have enquired about Winter Bean seeding as opposed to Spring Bean. We have therefore developed a cost effective, soil improving and timely operation to ensure that the Winter Beans are sown at the optimal time and to the optimal depth.

With the ability to seed to a depth of up to 12 inches the Remac soil loosener fitted with the ‘Once’ drill foot and tine, we can offer a two stage seeding service, not only is the Bean seed seeded to a depth below any pests or weather conditions but also the subsoiler section of the Remac lifts and aerates soil, reliving compaction and offer a sustainable and long term benefit to the current crop but also the following crop, opening opportunities to direct drill the following wheat crop into the bean stubble, further reducing costs of production.

Beans do not require a fine seedbed and will tolerate cloddy conditions (although weed control may be poor) and over-cultivation should be avoided. Beans are sensitive to soil compaction, but are more tolerant of consolidation and waterlogging than peas. The Remac ‘Once’ drill application allows for compaction relief as well as avoiding over cultivation.

Winter beans can be broadcast or drilled onto the soil surface and then covered by shallow ploughing. However, both seed distribution and seedling emergence can be very uneven. More than half the area of winter beans is now drilled. Winter beans should not be sown too early - not before the second week of October. Crops which are too forward are more prone to disease and to the effects of severe winter weather. Sowing from mid-October to early November is usually the optimum time, but acceptable crops have been produced from early December drilling.

We are offering this service to customer for £55/hectare, remember to book early to ensure your crop is seeding when you want it. Since this is a new service for us we are offering an early booking discount by offering your first 5 hectares at a 5% discount.
