Never grown them before, recovering OSR grower. Which is a good winter variety and what seed rate if ploughing or Claydon drilled please? Any other advice welcome.

Vesper or Wizzard.
Beans are a ‘Wish you’ crop.
I’m a recovering Winter Linseed addict/grower heading for AB6, but can’t do so for 12 months, so will also be growing Winter Beans, just for the one year.

Just wondering what people s thoughts are for Winter Oats as an alternative?
I’m a Weaving GD Direct drill user and slightly worried about Winter beans.

In my experience, disc drills work 50% of the time re beans if you have clay.
always use the old horsch co now.

200kg/ha minimum if drilling,250 minimum if ploughing in. If you’ve got half decent land and no trash or chopped straw I’d claydon or sumo dts them.

Claydon drills grow mega bean crops - never bettered a crop we grew here once with an early SR
Never bettered is a phrase commonly associated with growing Winter Beans! I noted you have since grown them established with Avatar? Have you had any in 2023 and if so how did they fare with a true no till scenario. Pretty awful where I go.

no - beans not great on a disc drill really - we usually use our converted CO tine drill for beans - it’s not unlike a Claydon really
