Hi all, new to the forum so forgive me if im posting this in the wrong section. I was curious what feed people use for growing and finishing their cattle. We've currently finished our feed contract with wynnstay and are curious whats out there before entering it again and if their is the possibility to save money and maybe improve proformance of livestock.

Currently we are not running a mixer wagon however are willing to invest in one. What rations are everyone using, simpiler the better. Is fodder beet any good as its fairly cheap and not needed to be stored inside?

Thanks

Beets good but requires quite a bit of handling and can be time consuming.

Maize silage is hard to better. especially for finishing cattle

I wouldn’t bother with a diet feeder unless your going to mix your own straights and have reasonable scale to spread the investment across.

Best feeder I know of is using grass silage, soya, ammonia treated barley, wheat, maize meal & oats as a introduction diet and switching to grass silage for maize silage after a couple of weeks. He then adds water to the mix as the maize silage is drier that the grass silage.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
