Winter Linseed

I was watching Harry Metcalf's Youtube video about him combining winter linseed. I grew spring linseed a lot during the nineties, but I didn't like the late the late September harvesting, when I wanted to be drilling.

A winter variety became available, so I put in 20 acres. Unfortunately, we had a hard winter and the frost killed the lot. Presumably, there are frost hardy varieties these days.

In over 50 years of farming, that was the only total crop failure I ever had.

It’s ok....

Grown winter linseed a couple times. Yuen’s nothing special.

They claim slugs and pigeons don’t like it.

Not true.

Combining was early and easy but we used reglone per harvest to crisp it up. Not an option now.

Im considering it again but need to look at available chemistry for weed control

Only period the winter is the early harvest. Cons are chem costs; seed cost; pigeons like it; prepare for it to look pretty sad over winter subject to conditions. You miss the incredible stale seedbed chance from spring.

I think the newer varieties are more frost tolerant than hardy, which means they are more likely to stand the frosts. But frost heave is something that can take out even those, but have not heard of lost crops to that for a few years.
