Guessing what the weather will be like in 2 months time.
Fair point.

In our case, however, this year's yields will be positively correlated with success in guessing what the weather last autumn would turn out to be like in just 2 days time.

Where it stayed reasonably dry for a few days, preferably up to a week or so, after drilling it's OK; where it immediately got rained on unexpectedly and heavily, which most did, it's not.

For September and October plantings here, this finding is completely independent of species, varieties, seed generations, cultivations, drilling systems and any and all other prior or subsequent inputs.

Spring wheat on sandy soil. 2t/ac if we’re lucky. Only had 20mm of rain since the end of April.

Rightly or wrongly I'm going to go through my milling wheat with some foliar N with some Epsom salts and t3 fungicide. Is it better to spray in the evening even though it's still warm and the crop is under heat stress or very early in the morning when everything is cooler but the heat of the day is imminent.

Worst bits on brash yesterday, notice the change of soil type and the difference it makes.

Just to prove it's not all doom and gloom, better ground late Nov and Dec drilled, Firefly and Barrel.

Another case of 'be careful what you wish for'.
Your secondary tillering's effort's pretty pathetic compared with some of ours this time, in the WB, the WW and the WO.

We last had this problem to manage here in 1982 when we decided to desiccate the WB and WW but to leave the second crop of WO to ripen naturally. gambling upon the first crop holding on, only to get a big gale blow up from nowhere the night before harvest.

@bankrupt If you didn’t have bad luck, you’d have no luck at all!

Trouble is, I think there are more people than expected sitting quietly, with decent enough crops. There have been some useful rains around the country now.
Trade seems to be thinking the bad news is all out there, is my take on it.
