Winter wheat

We have several patches of winter wheat that are struggling, would they benefit from the old method of Cambridge rolling to assist them to tiller? It seems like a cost free risk which could work?

Yes could do, as long as it's warm enough and dry enough that soil does not stick to rollers or rear tyres of tractor

Also speak to agronomist as there is an art to use of chemical that can help tillering along with careful timing of N applications

Trinexapac (Moddus) just before stem extension can help with tillering. But rolling can also achieve the same, and will be cheaper

Do not roll the crop unless it is dry underneath. You will see the wheel marks all season otherwise. Ground needs to be properly dried out for that.

A whack of moddus and some N as soon as you can get there will work just as well. If it stays cool in March you are all going to need moddus as chlormequat won't work very well anyway.

We have the same problem here I thought about rolling it when it’s dry enough but I have just put 220 kgha of nitrogen on this afternoon as I could travel

+1.
Rolling may also firm up the plants and reduce the risk of lodging, press down stones etc... Although, it does have be dry enough. dust from rolls=(y)
