Been umming and arhing over getting one ever since wood burner went in. Finally bit the bullet this autumn and got one. 4 bladed one, circa £60.
Wish had got it yrs ago.

Got a smaller 2 bladed one for the old man, and he reckons that's pretty effective too (y)

Do they work by convection ? or what ever it's called.
They generate a small electric current, buy heat differential, which drives the motor. Hence they work best at the edge of the stove or they get too hot. Our stove is so hot anyway the fan made little difference, so sold it to an eco enthusiast!

I got one of these for Christmas, my stove has a steel plate on the top with an air gap between it and the fire box so the fan takes ages to get going.

Thinking about putting a bit of steel plate between the firebox and the top cover to bridge the gap and transmit heat to the fan base?

They only make a noise when the fire is proper roaring, but then a bi metal spring in the base eases the fan up off the heat and it slows down a bit, I got a silver bladed one but had to paint it black as it flashed to much, choose a black blade model.
You have to point the fan away from your seating otherwise it cooks you.

They are great,, got mine off eBay, £37 and it really does create a average warmth,, especially in a long thin room..
Having said that the cat hates it, so it doesn't point towards the sofa..

Has anyone done that, ( a pice of metal to transfer the heat) and does it work good enough ? Have a hunter herald with a canopy here always fancied a fan, but not much heat from the top of the canopy.
