Woodland weed control

We’ve got a bit of coppiced woodland that was cut a couple of years ago and has come up with the usual brambles, foxglove etc but has a large population of gores (scotch, bull thistle) and ragwort. It’s come from a neighbouring property that has had very bad management from a decade ago. Last year we cut and pulled it and it’s even worse this year, it’s not a big patch, maybe three tennis courts I suppose.

I’ve come to the conclusion it’s going to need spraying with something, the question being what? Thistlex and mcpa maybe? Have put the steel blade on the brushcutter to prevent seeding but they’ll have another go before the years out.

Thanks for any advice,

Could you hire a robocut with a flail ?
Ha ha ! I’d love to but perhaps a bit overkill for the area I’ve got. They’ll still come back for another go even then I suspect, it’s not really too bad a job with the brushcutter to be fair: nice quiet wood when I switch off, cup of tea and a biscuit more often than I should.

But I don’t want to do it again.
