Please can someone explain why wool has little value as it must be one of the most sustainable,natural products on the planet!!
Is it the washing/cleaning of the wool that is a big problem as uses so much water that has to be disposed of in an environmentally way but that’s difficult due to so much lanolin in it.

Well, this year all my wool will be going to the wool board. Last year I saw a company in Devon that makes garden string etc. wanted Whitefaced Dartmoor wool and were paying a lot more than the wool board for it. I contacted them and they said a local farmer takes it in for them weighs it and lets them know how much each person supplying it is owed. I dropped off two sheets full ( about 150 to 200KG) at said farm and waited for my money. after a couple of months and no payment I phoned the company and they said they would come back to me and let me know what was happening. So far I have NOT heard back from the company and despite me supplying contact details and bank account details have not received any payment. So this year it will go to the wool board as it has in the past, they might only pay peanuts for it but that is better than bugger all.

You would think they’d want to foster ongoing relationships with suppliers, especially if they have particular requirements regarding breed, etc. Seems very shortsighted to pull a fast one like that imo.

Its still far better than the wool board.....the wool board took my neighbours wool and sent him a receipt to inform him that he owed them money but they would overlook it as a goodwill gesture!

Have you been back to the farm ranting and raving I certainly would have done?!
i had this with scrap - 4 of us turned up one Saturday morning early (not as many lads in on Saturday) and kicked off with them got paid whilst stood there was very hair raising to say the least. Yard went bust couple of months later.

I’ve wool carpets for 15years no moth damage?
I treaded all the beams in the barn which I converted with premethrin prior to converting it perhaps it lingers, all the new wood that went in was also treated
I will prob clip and just throw the fleeces in a pile, if kids wanna sort and pack them into sheets then they can have the money I get

You prob right but last time I weighed them if I remember correctly they were 1.5kg average, so at db that’s 1.35 a fleece, not a bad little earner for some 7-14 year olds, obviously I will nock off storage and delivery

The samples go to WTAE in Caernarfon and they will measure the micron and various other attributes. It is only really of benefit if you have lower micron wools such as LLeyn or Romney or Cheviot. Hill Welsh or Radnors won't be candidates for breeding finer wool.
It is a free service and interesting to this who would like to add value to wool.
