Work Experience on a farm for a day

I have to say requests like this would make me very nervous.
I would be contacting Huddersfield Univ to check out the authenticity of OP and the requirements.
I appreciate that we all may think that we have nothing to hide, but maybe for someone who has never ventured near the farming environment, whatever they may see you may be judged on. Good or bad in their eyes, not your eyes.
Cameras, phone, recordings, written words, data protection - be so very careful, please.

We regularly host farm visits from schools, general public, assorted interest groups and have work experience students who have never been on a farm before. I think perhaps we are getting too paranoid?

Some of the responses aren't particularly reassuring either, and don't reflect well on the industry.

Every dissertation or degree level project needs a whole section on "Research Ethics" in order to get accepted, graded and possibly published as peer-reviewed research. There are set standards and rules which define what constitutes "ethical research".

For my dissertation this chapter made up 900 words out of the 20,000. One of my conditions was that none of the people who contributed towards my data were mentioned by name, so they were all untraceable and anonymous.

I would encourage the OP to make her Research Ethics section available to her hosts, as they form part of her data.

Hi,

Thank you very much for all of your responses. I have uploaded my ethics form from the University of Huddersfield.

I hope this will encourage you to offer me the opportunity of working on your farm for the day or taking observations.

I will look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks

Emily

The OP seems fairly plausible to me. There are really not that many things that will make a positive difference to how well a given farm works: the farmer's attitude / effort; the laws / rules he works under; the quality of his stock / crops; the standard of his equipment.

The thing is, I cant see how it will be easy for anyone without an ag' background to properly evaluate these and identify potentially advantageous changes, and certainly not in a day. Perhaps, following on from @Farmer_Joe, focusing on one specific unsatisfactory piece of kit or practice would be the best plan; but if the farmer has a brain he won't have anything like that, having adapted or altered it already. :scratchhead:

You'd be surprised what can be seen by a fresh pair of eyes, unecumbered by years of "we have always done it like this".

I can't imagine every farm in the country is running at peak efficiency.

Hence what I wrote; something is going to have to be fairly obvious for a non-ag' person to spot it and, this being so, if will probably have changed already.

I agree regarding being stuck in ways and everyone having room for improvement; but... I think there would be far more to be gained from a walk-around by a decent farmer from another county. (y)
