Workers and equipment damage

The lad who is in question is always close on time for been late. He usually is only coming up the drive at the time he is supposed to be at work. He is actually good with the livestock. Think we need to Have a chat to iron these things out. As he is a bit relaxed with it all.
Is he always away bang on time? Or do you get five or tens mins “free” at the other end of the day? I appreciate the start time is the start time and if you let him away with it, it could get worse or set a bad example.

Pulling ram guard off is fairly easy, I’ve done it in a moment of day dreaming

I never make my staff pay for damages. I don’t even shout at them. I tell them I’m upset and disappointed

That tends to do the trick and they start grovelling
You harsh barsteward!! Hope you don’t give them the silent treatment too? One bloke I work for goes all quiet and moody and that’s far worse than having a right good bollocking and getting it over and done with!!

I’ve just knocked abit of wall down with the plow wheel working with machinery accidents happen and stuff will always break so it’s unfair to punish workers unless there complete tools obvcourse

Accept that people make mistakes occasionally, make them understand the cost of the mistake (time, money, inconvenience etc.).

If things keep happening then take disciplinary action, a written warning always serves to sharpen the mind.

Go with 3 strikes and you're out,it keeps you sweet legally and everyone knows where they stand. You may even see people offering to try and make things right, as they fully appreciate how thin the ice is getting.

Unless you have a fixed finish time has to be a bit of give and take on being a few minutes late

Yeah if he is early I let him go early or at least try to. if he is late I find few things to make sure that he isn't away early.

Just needs to tighten timing up.

Sorry isn't that hard to get up 5 mins early. Can be up to 10 mins on his worst occasions. Bit slack on time keeping on breaks too

Tread carefully. Start being too pedantic and anal about start times and you might find he starts treating his finishing times the same way.

How would you feel if he downed tools at 5 o'clock regardless of whether he was in the middle of something or not?

Sounds like you need to have a chat with the employee in question and find a compromise that suits both of you, or agree to part company. Whatever suits.

I had a lad worked for me, self employed hourly rate. He charged me for a few too many hours in his first week so I had a word with him, turned out he had charged me for his breaks, 7.5 hrs in the week. The next week he did the same!

He didn’t do it a third time.....

On the breaking kit issue, I wonder how much is done whilst fricking about on their phones? I don’t mind them answering the odd call whilst off road but they are getting a bit of a joke now. You can even see them driving around with phone in hand whilst they’re not even using them! It’s like they have an addiction and the phone MUST be touching their skin!

Just out of interest would you expect to pay for any of the breaks? I think round here a mid morning tea break would be classed as a paid break as long as your not taking the pee and having an hour. But lunch break which would be a longer break should be knocked off the time sheet.

I knock 30 min a day off lads for dinner. All brew times they get paid for

Interesting read here, because several weeks ago I was unloading a shipment of def with the Bobcat and was watching fork tines, got a bit to close to the trailer, kapow right in my face went the door/window,
I didn't think twice about it, swiped my personal card and put a new one on to the tune of 250 USD :(
No boss wouldn't have expected me to pay, but I felt responsible and will be on guard a bit more next time.
He tries to keep up to date, reliable, operator friendly kit, employees should return the favor by being sensible ,caring ,and responsible for their actions,I think .
It's called respect .
And it works both ways (y)

That’s a very commendable attitude, and I respect you for paying for the glass.
However, I would never expect any employee to pay for things they have broken, I would actually be very upset if someone paid for damage like that, I know that’s a bit of an odd reaction, but it just doesn’t feel right if employees start paying for things. They come to work, I pay them for their work, end of, I don’t expect them to subsidise my business by paying for anything.

But things happen, sometimes I get upset, sometimes I’m calm, it really depends on the circumstances. Plenty of things have been fudged up by employees, some are more expensive than others, some don’t cost much at all, but all are a learning experience! The problem comes if the same mistakes happen time and time again......
If things get damaged, I think it’s important to make the person aware of just how much money and time it will cost to put right, I’m not saying shout at them and make them feel guilty, but just make them aware. Also get them involved in the repair as much as possible, if they come to work the next day and you’ve fixed whatever it is overnight, they have no idea of the consequences of their mistake, hopefully seeing the extent of any damage will make them be a bit more careful next time.

At the end of the day we’ve all done things, damaged this or that, no matter how careful or proud you are. As long as nobody got hurt, then it’s all replaceable stuff....

I still haven’t figured out the best corse of action when dad damages stuff though?.......:scratchhead:.....:ROFLMAO:

I said this on another thread a few weeks ago, timeliness is one thing in the day (bar negating extreme circumstances) that every employee should get RIGHT. No excuse for being late, no excuse for having extending breaks, no excuse for leaving early. Time theft is the one thing I will not stand for, breakages and sh*t days are a part of life, I can be the best at times for breaking things :ROFLMAO: but being on time, get it right! Go to bed and be ready for work, give 100% of your best ability and things can turn out very different in life.

At my old job the lad I worked with backed into van with loadall and smashed all front bumper off, when we got back to yard we told boss, he gave us a little ticking off but wasn’t to bad. Next morning we decided that we’d go to ford and buy a new bumper, so we went and put it on the firms account and then refit it on site in their time. When boss saw it that night he was chuffed to bits and gave us £50 cash for spending our money and sorting it. Never told him :D
