Working hours.

Last 2 days were rather large. We had 20mm of rain the other day so been discing 110 ac of ground to run the laser bucket over it again . Between that milking and feeding, did 19hrs yesterday and 13 today..trying to make the most of it before it all dried up as it topped out at 40c today....Looking forward to going to bed , although its still 38c at 8pm....may need a few more cans to attain a deep sleep...

Do you ever think that people just weren't supposed to live in Australia?

Way to hot for me..

There are not many things more boring than a dairy farmer complaining about how many hours he worked. It's all about management. You're only running a little dairy farm. It's not like you are the only one in the world with the abitly to do the job.
you could have written that more politely but you are absolutely right. Farmers seem to think they are the only people who run a business that work hard I am very conscious not to complain about the hours I work. there are many benefits to my career that I would mention first.

I thought I tried to write it politely but no matter what someone will be upset.

Agree, I get embarrassed at farmers acting like they are they only ones who work hard or lots of hours.

Most farmers are their own worst enemies, they also love complaing as well.

when it comes to complaining I think is just a reflection of positive and negative people in society as a whole.i know many people in the pub for example who are never happier than when having a good old moan!
the only difference with most farmers is that they get free money from the government to do it!

In that case there must be a lot more negative people in farming. I try to avoid groups of farmers, it just makes me depressed.

My main drinking lot are an industrial chemist, night porter, fireman, architect, something to do with aircraft, welder, HR executive.

They all moan, the one who does it the least is the night porter.
Non of them like my free money though:nailbiting:.

I don't see where i was complaining. i was just telling you what i had been up too. At least i sleep well at night knowing that i have done a decent days work and the results speak for themselves. Nothing annoys me more than when someone who won't get off there arse and do anything tells me how lucky i am to have what i have.

I didnt think you were, finding it quite interesting(y).

Everyone has a bit of a moan but the worst by far of the people I know are dairy farmers.

As Johnny Rotten said . . .It's a lifestyle choice

I'm almost a part-time dairy farmer, non-farming businesses take me 15-20 hours a week.
If you want the income you have to put the work in, just like everyone else in any other profession

You just have to be careful. I wear rubber gloves goggles once mixed it is fine. Its a pain to mix weekly. When we do crimp its done in a day. I tend to find the cows are sluggish on crimp. Loads more milk in caustic than anything else we've fed

Why can't you do the caustic treating all at the one time? Does it not store well in large quantities? Only ever done a small amount before.

Well I said in my post that I thought my weekday hours were quite manageable. Being critical (and we need to be) I also said I thought I should be taking more time off, but I also said it was up to me to organise that through freeing up more time for myself.

I'm not long back from a short trip away with 30 other dairy farmers. Can't recall anyone complaining about working hours, or the poor profitability for that matter. Mood positive and everyone happy to be away from the farm for a couple of days. I think you are being a bit negative about our industry. We are entitled to have a chat about these things without doing it in a complaining manner, as perhaps something good can come from it with renewed focus or a better perspective.

We do get money from the government, but it's not quite free, and we certainly don't get to keep all of it. Also, any time we take off is technically unpaid. I could happily argue that those drinking mates get free money for not turning up to work six weeks a year.
