So how long should a decent working week be for a dairyman? I know I'm way over it at the minute but I'm not doing it forever.
it needs to be as long as you feel it needs to be everyone has different ideas of what they want out of the job, mine is to know I can put food on the table enjoy what I'm doing be able to afford the nice things in life and not be running round like a silly bugger 18 hrs aday.

What is being counted as working hours here? All householders are required to carry out maintenance of their property and land and vehicles whether that's a tiny box with a forecourt and an old banger or a private mansion with a few acres of garden and a few cars. That is generally carried out outside of their salaried 39 hour week. Same applies to the paperwork. As it does with any self employed person. Farming (unless as an employee), is a lifestyle choice and having the benefit of acres of land at your disposal comes at a high maintenance and time cost.
Counting every hour of property maintenance and paperwork as working hours would mean most people outside of farming also work excessive hours.
One issue with farming seems to be the split shift aspect. Having free time between tasks tends to be used for the maintenance and so gets counted as the working day.

Also don't forget about commuting! I used to spend 3 hours per day commuting to work and about 10 hours at work, left the house just before 6am and didn't get back till after 7pm most nights. I would much rather be working than stuck in traffic!

Yes. I got a nice chemical burn on the top of my foot from one grain of caustic going down my boot. Took off boot and emptied but it was stuck in my sock. Hate to think what it would do if you got a grain in the eye. I think water makes it react

Do you think sodawheat would be a good supplement for grazing cows?

We're up at 3.45 but done finished milking by 5 normally but in summer most nights I'm not back home till 9/10 running from farm to farm silaging, muck, fert doing 4cuts a year.we do everything bar chopping and trailers, and 1 lot of pumping through the winter!next thing I wanna do is my own scanning,I have Saturday afternoon off and the odd afternoon off when we're not busy me dad has the same but Sunday afternoon.i love it Nothing more satisfying than seeing good crops and a good job done!
