Working your notice legalities

Her boss is the UK MD who is also the cousin of the group chairman and as family he feels invincible.
Staff in the past have complained to head office but to no avail.
She is fully aware of her contractual obligations , but the views of others from outside often bring to mind things you didn't think of .
A conversation with him is difficult as he is unpredictable ,devious and a superb manipulater.

Sorry to hear that she is in such a situation. My wife was in a similar situation at her work a good number of years ago. She did leave. It was the best move at the time that really lifted her spirits and enthusiasm in a supportive constructive team. However things have changed a bit where she works now aswell as they expand and forget about the asset that counts, the staff.
It could be that an industrial tribunal may consider her bosses behaviour as a form of constructive dismissal if she offered her resignation due to what you state as the behaviour of her boss. Clearly requires legal advise.
Hoping it gets worked out.

Put her notice in writing, and state she would appreciate a deal to terminate her employment without working the full notice period.
I would not bet on the company not following it up if she doesnt work her notice, and i dont believe it is the done thing. if during notice, life becomes very uncomfortable, then she must keep a diary of events and then take it to an employment lawyer for professional advice.
I would not either et on getting gardening leave, some companies do, some dont. I find it hard to believe the archair experts can have such confidence in such matters without knowing many more details.

I would concur with Wombats and Blodders advice. Always a frustrating circumstance when a good, fulfilling job is ruined by others.
I guess the other important point is wether she wants to continue in the industry and apply for further jobs in the same field or try something new and unrelated.
In either case a glowing reference, which would mean gritting teeth, saying you are looking for new challenges and amicably working the contractural notice period, would be useful. However if it's moving into something completely different it will be less relevant to future prospects and the standard HR dept 'so and so worked here for ....' may suffice.
No easy or complete answer with the details given.
Good luck to her though.

Due to the chances of being sued for saying the wrong thing, most companies will just give a factual reference--i.e. date started work, date finished work and position held. They don't want to "make" an unhappy employee work their notice either.

I left my job this week after struggling for 18 months with various levels of stress, just basic reference as above from the company but my Manager has said he will give me a good personal reference, and not required to work notice.

If she walked it is highly unlikely that the multi-national would engage over breach of contract as it would be very poor publicity. The days of a personal reference which would be supposedly non-existent as a result of walking is also now a myth as multi-nationals will have a standard reference form which will non-judgmentally state the period of service etc, so if she just left it would not affect her reference one jot. Again this is due to potential for reputational harm.
I agree that she should take this up with HR as a grievance against her boss, it could well be that she is more valuable to them than he is.(assuming the a*se is a he!).

I can confirm that Mrs SIOBOD50 was employed by our multinational finance company from date one until date two where she resigned with immediate effect and did not complete her 3 month notice period as contractually agreed.

Or similar.
