Don't!!

I saw a gate once when out trail riding, I think mid Wales, where the hinges had been banged into a tree!! :rolleyes: Probably pre smartphone era, else I would have grabbed a pic I am sure.
I bought an oak sawlog off a fella -in a mixed load of oak and chestnut.
A nub of rusty iron - like to the end of my thumb-was showing a coupla feet up from the butt, almost engulfed by the bark.

Sawyer Barrie set to with a chainsaw and a chisel, to chip away the timber surrounding it, so he could sail on with the mill.
Finally, he'd revealed both gate hangers, complete with fudging hangings.
The nub of iron was the end of a threaded bolt making the bottom hanging.

Counting back, the old farmer had watched these hangers become engulfed for about 70 years....most of his life.

We let some cows in to a field the other day and found the gates at the other end on had been taken off one hinges but then left there. Another gate on the next field up which is in a lay by was taken in day light even with the crooks in opposite directions.
Back home someone too an electric fence energizer from several hundred meters into the field in day light. We could see them do it from the kitchen window. Thought it was someone expecting the telegraph poles as they had been out the previous week.

Pet hates about gates;

a) people who put gateposts into concrete
b) )badly hung gates that have to be dragged open and closed, apart from my one which I will get around to fixing one day
c) people who climb or sit on gates at the latch end instead of the hinge end, which can lead to (b) gates.

Came across a large "lady" standing half way up a 12ft gate near the latch end shouting and screaming obscenities at the hunt at the far end of the field. There was a sudden loud crack and the gate hit the ground. She was still holding onto the top rail but her hands were jammed , under the gate with her bottom in the air. Her smaller friends tried to help her, but she was too heavy for them. I would have normally assisted, but as she was she was still swearing like a trooper at the gate, hounds, hunting folk and farmers in general who left their gates in poor repair, I suddenly remembered an urgent task and left her to it.

Guilty of a) but have learned.
Guilty of b) but getting there!
Agree with c) wholeheartedly...

Love the tale of the Anti, mind. :) Where was the camera when you needed it ;)

Funny thing about gates. You see lots of really knackered gates, but at farm sales, they always make more money than you can buy brand new ones for at the local Agric merchants (that you drove past on the way to the sale)
