Yep a car of any type if it’s near empty it’s not good news.
This guy covers heating cars and range loss, and just that problem sat in a que.
interesting video.... but my word i bet his teeth are glad when he goes to sleep. How to answer a 2 minute question in 16 minutes!

So crims just need to make sure they have a full tank of diesel and drive within the limits and the rozzers will hit zero soon enough? Good to know.
Did you not read the article? Do many pursuits last that long? Surely they would just get more cars involved? No different from a normal car getting tasked to a pursuit when they have next to no petrol…

There are reports that future electric cars made by Mercedes will be manufactured with some high-end features such as rear-wheel steering, but the customer will have to pay a subscription to unlock that feature on their car.

Nothing new really, plenty of stuff is built in just one or two different versions and then artificially limited to fit a lower spec.
Look at engines for example, sometimes you have the same block span a range from 150hp to 250hp in 10hp increments. However there's no way the manufacturer is going to stock different parts for each individual model so instead they build one ~190hp version which can then be detuned to 150, 160, etc etc, and one 250hp version..

I suppose it will be something for the ad-blu/dpf delete "specialists" to diversify into when there are no more diesels
"Unlock your rear- steering here from £50" :D

Mine has features pre-installed on the car but not turned on, like high end matrix lights, and even the fancy Audi LED indicators, that sweep from the centre of the car out- but all only activated if you pay a subscription via the app....

Will cost you £40/month, or £1025 on a three year special offer to turn it on- just a click of a button on the app.

The EQS is some car though...

My Mercedes cost 90K in 1997. It’s still a fantastic car. I can’t see these new cars ageing so well!

Stupid in reality. Why would anyone want to pay a hefty sub when you could download an alternative (such as Beemercode if you own a BMW) and do it that way

Personally, I don’t like the way modern cars allow themselves to get updates or track you. And I think EVs are going to be the worst for this.

I can just see it now: Me in a main dealer in 15 years time....

Salesman: How can I help you?

Me: I'm interested in a new one of these please but only if you can deactivate the telematics completely. I think a car having Internet connectivity is inherently unsafe.

Salesman: Sorry sir, we can't do that. Only the manufacturer can do that.

Me: Oh well, I suppose I can always get a man I know to hack it and disable it.

Salesman: Oh no sir, you can't do that or the car automatically triggers roadside sensors and the police will arrest you......

Me: Stuff that then, I'll just have to repair the old Octavia again then.....

May be an apocryphal story but a dealer told me of a chap who bought a new combine and went to get it out ready for its second harvest but it wouldn't start. He couldn't find why so called the dealer who informed him the manufacturer had disabled it because the finance payments were behind.....

Want it a Jeep that researchers in the US managed to hack into from a following car taking control of the steering and brakes to bring it to a halt at the roadside overriding the driver!

Not apocryphal at all …

We had a demo on a Manitou from Green Machines, the hire people.
It was a 7 day looksee and we parked it up after 5 days as it wasn’t for us. Anyway, needed to move it on the 8th day but it has been disabled remotely by GM and the collecting driver had to ring their HQ to get it released.

Hackers could play merry hell

Only a matter of time.

Imagine a Russian / Nigerian hacking team imobilising your combine in July and demanding payment to release it....

I am a technophile who was using computers in the 1970's but the level of technology in cars / tractors / trucks worries me now.

How long before someone is assassinated by vehicle hacking?

And Mark Zuckerberg wants us to all "live in the Metaverse™" in future......
