Evev though we all ways applied 6 wraps stack carefully and cover we have patches of mould on the end of some bales where the wrap started, but only on one field that was wrapped with a different type of wrap. how many layers are needed, does some wrap need avoiding and does any one use a preservative.

We use Silotite and generally put 6 layers on dry silage and 8 on wetter bales and have very little if any waste unless there's rat damage etc

Same here, the Silotite seems pretty good x 6; we do get an occasional bit of white fungus pushing it's way through, I guess getting in through unseen punctures (or pushing its way out from inside ), but no mould I the bales, so far... :nailbiting:

Could be the quatity of wrap or it may just be a lack of sugar in the grass so it's not fermenting well or maybe drier grass or less dense bales from that field. There are some brands of wrap we have used in the past which we wouldn't touch again with a bargepole. I think manuliwrap was the worst, very flimsy and silobal seemed to tear for fun. 6 layers of silawrap here on everything

Have used Silotite here for years, last year thought I'd save a bit by using a slightly cheaper one. As soon as I started wrapping with it you could tell the difference, not the same sound , felt the wrapper preferred it , cut & hold worked better, Brilliant until I looked at the bales , lots of little stretch holes on the shoulders of the bales.
Went back to buying Silotite.

We’ve been using Silawrap for approx 15 years. Never had any issues except this year. Most of our crop has turned out excellent. One batch though was bales just short of hay, a lot of dust and mould spores all around a large % of the bales. No noticeable holes.

silawrap and 6 layers here, as said above only waste I see is dry hard grass with no sugars left in it or not enough. proper grass for silage laying a day or to no problems

Seen the same this year... Got a contractor in on some "almost hay" material as we had a thunderstorm on the way and I was busy elsewhere. Very dense Fusion with silotite. Lotta mould.... my own smaller Krone bales done a couple of days sooner are gorgeous. In hindsight, hay with an additive would have been better...

do you think another day before baling and wrapping would make a difference?
Had the same happen the year before as well.
We have a bit of demand for proper wrapped hay so would like to keep making a bit.

I think if the poor bales as I described above had been left another day I would have had wrapped hay! Haylage is definitely an art, not a science :) I can make decent haylage for some horsey customers, but most are happy with pure hay, and save a fiver!
