Big freeze coming

According to my Dad there's a big difference between the dry cold the Canadians get and the wet cold we get over here...

The first time I experienced real cold was in Norway with the Army, it came right after a long exercise at Sennybridge, which was wet from start to finish and always - I guess - at about 3 degrees C; utterly miserable.* Norway, where it was minus 15 C on a warm day was a revelation, as long as you put clothing on / off appropriately it's fine to work and live in. Have only been in Canada in Winter on holiday, and then only with family in Halifax, but just like Norway, everything works and there is no panic; in fact I don't recall 'snow panic' here until recent years. Going soft...

*Without question cold and wet is the worst all round conditions for me.

I think it all goes back to when Michael Fish got it spectacularly wrong regarding the wind, ever since they seem to go with worse case scenario.

The forecast on my phone is currently only predicting -2 for Saturday night, that certainly won't cause me any problems............if correct.

Frost in Shropshire?
Lagging?
I think Shawbury in Shropshire has frequently recorded some of the lowest temperatures in England. Being in a frost hollow can also make a massive difference - we are often several degrees colder than a mile up the road.

I used to live in Worcs and my cooled hot water bottle on top of my bed froze in 1981(not solid, but ice crystals in side of it) when I came to refill it in the evening.

I used to work on
-4 put the quartz heaters on at the water troughs,
-7 get me pipe thawing gear ready to go, I have my very own patented (I wish) method of thawing pipes, especially handy for those awkward ones you can't get at, reminds me I need to get the parts to build another one(y)
-12 look out the pick-axe ready to dig down and unfreeze the mains, (not much use when Scottish Water haven't thawed the supply at the reservoir)

I find a big difference between Scottish cold and Peterborough cold!

Don't know why. Don't really feel cold when I'm working.

I remember 63. The pictures in the newspapers that people sent. I felt we were missing something, my first winter in India.
Muchlater, I can also remember ringing my youngest brother, born in India and living in Canada, when I got in from rhe pub, a few years ago. He said, "It's warmed up today, -15 so we opened the windows." !?!

I was living in a cottage in Wiltshire in 63. The snow came up to the first floor windows. My sisters decided it would be fun to lower me out of the window but I sank up to my armpits, so they dragged me back in. Of course I was soaked and cold. Sneaky little sister went to tell my mother, who just told me to go to bed. So I did, without getting changed first....
Today I told a new neighbour just to get a weeks supply in, as the roads are not gritted. He was totally shocked. I have seen a gritter come past twice in 40 years, on its way to somewhere else! Around 30 years ago we had a lot of snow, and a snowplough came through, but the bucket sheared off by the house and the road was closed for an extra few days!
