THE BADGER CULL

We are being pressured to up for the badger culling in Devon.
We don't have any cattle anymore and therefore TB doesn't really affect us.

My mother is very unsure about signing up in case the list of farms gets leaked and we end up getting protesters on our doorstep (my mum is on the farm her own at night). We also have a non ag business running from the farm that could do without the publicity this might bring.

The cost is relatively little (a flat rate per acre plus a per head of cattle of which we have none).

Our neighbours seem split (some are actively trying to sell the concept to other farmers, others are against it including some with cattle themselves.

What do I do :(

And the corn. Anybody who doesn't sign up because they don't have cattle themselves is beneath contempt. This could be the only chance we have to get Tb under control. If the cull doesn't get off the ground because people withheld their land for purely selfish reasons and not because of a genuine opposition to the cull itself they should be shunned.

culling does work i agree....but i don't agree with browbeating ppl....especially old ladies....sorry

No one is brow beating her!

Basically she is saying : I don't have cattle so TB doesn't affect me so I couldn't give a damn about my neighbours that have cattle!

The more farmers that sign up regardless of if they have cattle or not the better the effect of the cull on TB rates in badgers and cattle will be.

No idea if the OP has sheep or not but if she has then I wonder if she will change her views when they go down with TB ( Which plenty of sheep flocks in the SW are doing ) and she gets no compo for TB reactor sheep!

OP needs to look at the much BIGGER picture and not just herself!

Rubbish, they should sign up without delay!

All very well they haven't got cattle but what about their cattle farming neighbours?

Culling of badgers has been proven 110% to reduce TB in BOTH badgers and cattle.
With wild boar, deer, cat's, dog's, sheep and virtually everything else carrying TB I really can't believe TB problems come down to just one species but I maybe wrong. But I really think one species should be down graded to vermin rather than being protected.

'we are being pressured'....'our neighbours are split'.....sounds like a horrible situation for all involved

No one should be brow beaten into signing up for anything. Take some time and think things through, and then decide. If she would be in fear if she signed, fair enough. It is a shame it has come to that.
I would say that any warm blooded animal can get TB. A badger wandering through a playground and peeing in the sand pit can give children TB. Pets are at risk, as they stick their paws where badgers have been, and then clean themselves. It is not about cattle, it is about having something shedding a very dangerous bug freely in the countryside and towns.
None of us want to cull a healthy badger, but if we had nipped this in the bud years ago, healthy badgers would be about and not the sick diseased ones, passing this on to anyone and anything.

Would you sign if you had a TB free farm for the last 47 year's and there must be around 6000+ acres of scrub type land ( country side stewardship and land planted with trees and poorly farmed by ex town dweller's with no idea) within 2 miles of your farm unsigned? Hypertheticly of course

110% the reason why TB has spread to all the species that you mention is because badger numbers have got out of control since they became protected thanks to Labour!

When you see sick or dead badgers around your cattle, then you do a TB test a few weeks/months later and 1/4 ( or worse ) of the cattle that these ill badgers have been near go down with TB its VERY clear that badgers are too blame!
