Last MF to be sold here with 6.354 was the 3080 in late 1991.When did the 6.354 finish? I suppose it was still in production after MF updated their tractors?

399 got the 1006 at the same time as the side-shift gearbox.Early 90s I'd say
Early 399s had 6 354, later had 1006
Yes a good tractor ruined , but I suppose for arable work the side shift would be preferable399 got the 1006 at the same time as the side-shift gearbox.

Ok let me rephrase, I suppose the side shift box suits steering wheel attendants but for real men who can drive 3 stick box , or MP is betterNot at all.
I'm yet to find a three-range box that's as good as a two-range!
With this MF side shift- 1st in high range is too high for starting off with a big loaded trailer on soft ground, you can try starting in 3/4 M but by the time you've stirred the lever to get into high momentum and speed is lost.
Give me Multi-power anyday!

It makes a David brown seem slickI'm not so sure?
We've had casuals get in a muddle with it.
(Get into range area when changing up from 2 to 3 and end up coming to a halt on the road!)
It's an awful gearbox that should't have reached production.

I'm begin serious !

It's a stupid high, med,low and 1234 all on one stick instead of the 2 or 3 levers in the middle of the floorWhat is the side shift?
It’s managed 7000 hours on our 375 without any drama that spring broke but that ain’t a expensive fix, o think it’s worse on tractors with big back wheels as 1st high is fine on that 375 but it is on small wheelsIt's a stupid high, med,low and 1234 all on one stick instead of the 2 or 3 levers in the middle of the floor
But high first is too fast so lots of changes from med to high and it's not even very reliable
I have also been told newest 4300 series with 24 speed high first is low enoughIt’s managed 7000 hours on our 375 without any drama that spring broke but that ain’t a expensive fix, o think it’s worse on tractors with big back wheels as 1st high is fine on that 375 but it is on small wheels
Only if a rare 30kph version or a 2wd [which are all 30kph]I have also been told newest 4300 series with 24 speed high first is low enough

Well obviously. Our 4235 has the 30KPH version of the 12sp shuttle side shift.
It's on little wheels, and these do help- but it depends more on size of load and on what ground.
It's much more difficult starting off on a soft field than on concrete.
As good as 12 speed syncro?Only if a rare 30kph version or a 2wd [which are all 30kph]
The latest two range 12 speed box fitted to the Global 5700 range all the way up to 120hp is a far superior design. Absolutely lovely change with the ratios all in the right place.
