You used to tip it out in heaps about 10yards apart with the horse and cart, then spread it out by hand through the late winter/early spring.Older folk on the forum might actually have done it.
I think we just called it a muck hack, but could be wrong;bit before my time.Bad enough for me griping the load out of an old international land drive spreader by hand when the floor chain snapped, then rivoting the links back together. If you have the book,"The Last Horsemen" by John Dodd and family,i think they still do it.Did it here, field would look smart with the heaps left in a regular pattern, used a hevall with the tines turned called a slum ? to pull the dung out of the cart
Probably but my grandfather didnt have one just a normal cart apparently. Great grandfather didnt like technology they were still ploughing with a horse well into the 50s only a small farm so probably couldnt afford proper equipment eitherI though the old fashioned muck carts were designed so they tipped over the axle, so you could pull a lever and the cart tipped its load backwards in a neat heap in the field? Then it was spread by hand from the heap?

One of my first jobs as a boy throwing mangolds into the trailer by hand.No gripe allowed.Just remembered the joyous day we borrowed a tipping trailer for the mangolds
Not quite my first job, I had started at the farm a little earlier in the year. Mine was hand hoeing the things first with a draw hoe.One of my first jobs as a boy throwing mangolds into the trailer by hand.No gripe allowed.
