Did it here, field would look smart with the heaps left in a regular pattern, used a hevall with the tines turned called a slum ? to pull the dung out of the cart
I think we just called it a muck hack, but could be wrong;bit before my time.Bad enough for me griping the load out of an old international land drive spreader by hand when the floor chain snapped, then rivoting the links back together. If you have the book,"The Last Horsemen" by John Dodd and family,i think they still do it.

My uncle remembers my late grandfather doing it. When he took over from his father he stopped leaving it in heaps and spread it with a fork straight from the cart. Saved handling it twice once out of the cart and again to spread it. And into the cart of course. My great grandfather didnt approve of course

I though the old fashioned muck carts were designed so they tipped over the axle, so you could pull a lever and the cart tipped its load backwards in a neat heap in the field? Then it was spread by hand from the heap?

Probably but my grandfather didnt have one just a normal cart apparently. Great grandfather didnt like technology they were still ploughing with a horse well into the 50s only a small farm so probably couldnt afford proper equipment either

You would not want a cart full in one place. just pull out enough to spread over about a 8 ft radious. heaps allowed a composting effect on the strawy dung, breaking it down into an easily spreadable product..
Carts were pivoted at just before the point of balance, held in place with a tipstick, A steel tongue at the front with holes to limit the amount of tip,
sometimes we carried a pole of the right length to put under the front slanted to lift as you pulled foreward.
New drivers would often take out tipstick, take off tailboard, empty cart, put tailboard back and drive back to field having forgot to put tipstick back in:mad:
