On last years standing straw prices it would need to be about £8/bale ex field and out the shed in a normal trading winter £15/ bale to cover costs and leave a margin.

Round bale barley is now trading at £45 bale ex farm in the SW.
you must be glad you bought all 500? you were offered at sub £20 back end of last year....45-20x500=£12500. @Henarar get your breaky order in for sedgemoor this weekend!

Those made £20 near Tounton on Tuesday . I appreciate that's your local prices but we work on east coast prices that are generally cheaper

I have never used any miscanthus for bedding cattle on Have you ?
and I spose if you chopped the stuff in the pics up enough it would be fine
TBO I was surprised how good bean helm is for the job and that's quite course but the cows and calves seem happy enough on it

when all these new schemes come in for the environment they may pay us to row something like that and there will be plenty of rough late hay about from land they pay you not to cut till august, so one day bed with hay the next day with miscanthus or something similar all grow on farm or local and it will save all these straw dealer lorry's running about the place clogging up the road and the payments will mean we can all keep less animals and take it easy and better prices so win win all round, well nearly all round
don't you think :)

Or grow a bit of cereal? Could call it “mixed farming”. Wonder if it will ever catch on?
