Automatically putting him at a disadvantage to the tenent so he has to put up his prices to cover it and makes his business uneconomical, this socialist business model takes some working out
He has no rent to pay, so he is better off already. Plus the poor wee lamb has the capital gain

@glasshouse , just bear in mind that if there were no landlords willing to let, there would be less foothold opportunities for the young, entrepreneurial types that the country needs.

Landlords, of whatever type, service a need, and have a legitimate role in the business and social structure. I’m afraid there will always be inequalities in wealth, so it’s best not to be all resentful and bitter about it.

I am neither resentful or bitter, i just see a better way of doing things. Landlords do have a place, but they hold far too many cards in the game at present.

@glasshouse Admire your defence of your views on life but in life there are apparent unfair situations brought about by one factor "human nature". Realists accept that if the wealth of a country was divided equally between all on 1stjuly by the 1staug some would have the same amount, others plus 10% (by hard work) others plus 50% by Gambling on horses or even in business , Life aint fair to all but opportunity exists for those brave enough to grasp it.

cough cough,
an wot about the holders of -minus %ages?
I absolutly agree with your statement btw.
Which is why the Citizen Corbyn type retoric disgusts me.
A statement, someone of apparent influence, made many years ago still stands true "the poor will always be with us",
I cannot see this changing ever, simply a facet of the human condition.

I am not, generally, a harsh person; simply a realist  - and, poor Clive...

The reality is such as you, and our friend Plato, would suggest; but which is inferior?

Westminster, or Brussels?
Interesting question.

The European Commission is good at negotiations, because that's what it is designed for - whilst Westminster has proved not only incompetent (which is understandable, because it wasn't what it is designed for) but also weak and unrealistic (which is something I suspect many UK citizens do not overlook so easily).

As a result, the UK Government looks perilously close to failing, while the Commission continues to function. So there's the most realistic answer.

It's not a very palatable answer to the English, nor a very comfortable answer to the rest of us. Wales is largely federalised and we can experience the variable quality of governance from Brussels, Westminster and Cardiff.

The only one that is visibly both incompetent and dishonest is Westminster.

It's a very sad observation.

Author's Note: the over-sensitivity of the English to any criticism, even mildly implied, is probably because they don't like how things have turned out for them. It doesn't help that, today, they have no idea what to do about it.

When you're a quasi 'democratic' technocracy with no real scrutiny from the press nor the electorate, hidden away, you can get away with what you like, especially when you cherry pick the easiest parts of society to govern over.

That’s the narrative remainders would have you believe.

So tell me what the future for the UK post Brexit is? I've been waiting 2 years for someone to tell me where the country is going and where this stash of post Brexit gold is hidden, and how we access it. It's about time the Brexiteer's started telling us how they see the future, instead of going on about how great we were 200 years ago. No bullsh!t about fantasy boarders or massive trade deals with the US and China, none of these things will happen in the short term.

Life was a lot fairer before thatcher unleashed the landlords , whom labour had thoroughly chained up when they had the chance and the will.

You've been told about 5 billion times, if it wont sink in, it never will, you can never tell us the end game of the nation state within the EU and ever closer union.

Why are you obsessed with the short term? this short term 5 year period politics is why we're in such a sh!t heap situation, when you take on a tenancy, you plan for the next 25 years if possible, the same goes for Brexit, since when were farmers short termist's? especially when they usually spread their costs over years to keep the tax bill down.

I would argue that to suggest Westminster is any more incompetent or dishonest than the EC is downright dishonest, never mind the staggering endemic corruption within the EC bureaucracy.
Please don't call me dishonest - I am a retired solicitor with an unblemished professional record who has, in the past, helped govern my profession.

What is your record of integrity and endeavour?

If you don't like my observations, or my conclusions, then advance reasons why they might be incorrect.
