Mercedes X-Class Pickup Drive

They were paying people out of failed vehicles very handsomely...? (And offering a good discount on a new vehicle...?)

You could fault Nissan for building shite pickups but they did back them up pretty well in this case. Contrast them with some other brands, even so called 'premium' brands that leave their customers completely on their own. Look at VW/Audi group who have left their own customers down but also devalued nearly every other diesel car on the market, and note that they have bought back cars and paid handsome compensation to US customers but sweet Fanny Addams to European and British customers.
Give me a Nissan any day of the week even though their customer service is generally quite poor, just like most others.

People tell me that Hyundai and Kia have just about the best warranties and customer back-up from any manufacturer anywhere. I would like to know whether that's true some day.

Been driving the Merc today vs the farms v6 VW

Price wise not dissimilar I’m told in this spec

Initial thoughts -

Merc has nicer interior and feels generally higher build quality

Parked alongside each other looks subjective but it’s not a bad looking thing

VW is the faster but that’s expected as v6 vs 4cylinder

Merc rear suspension feels more planted, probably because it’s not got leaf springs

You wouldnt buy a Merc if it was cheap!, the whole idea is it costs more for the same, thats how premium brand marketing works.

It's usually based on something more concrete though. Usually.
More luxury and/or quality springs to mind. Or ultra performance or rarity.
Mercedes isn't rare. Mercedes make vans and cheap shitboxes. They do make fairly exclusive luxury vehicles with a bit of extra build quality at the top end of their range, but Mercedes shitboxes are average in everything including price.

Having said that, they do have some nice models. You just have to choose carefully.

The X-Class isn't one of them though. You can dress up a turd as smartly as you like but its still a turd and still stinks. It shares the paper-thin chassis that has an amazing number of holes stamped in the sides, to allow shite to enter and rust it from the inside, with the Navara. Just about everything is Navara about it apart from the badge and price. Where is the added quality? Where is the added durability? Where is the added longevity? Where is the added reliability? It's just not there. It is a pickup for badge snobs and idiots it seems to me.

[hope I don't end up buying one and eating my words  ]

I personally really dislike the front end on them, seems all wrong somehow. Needs to be sharper, more masculine somehow.

No where near as good as the concept

Shame they didn’t run with that concept. It would be in a league of its own looks wise.

How much can the Merc tow?
Legally that is
Same as Navara. 3.5 tons.

I've priced the Mercedes up

X250 Progressive 190hp automatic. £30510 + VAT
Comfort pack. 1250
Style pack. 2190
Parking pack. 915
Heated seats. 340
Sat Nav pack. 2225
Load Liner. 250

Total extras as above. £7170 to bring it in line with the Navara Tekna

Total cost as above without tow hitch or metallic paint or any on-the-road costs…………..

£37,680 + VAT.

Question then arises as to just how much discount to expect, if any? It needs to be down to within say £4k of the Nissan [for the badge] to be anywhere near sensible money. So there needs to be £12750 of discount.
Would they give 10%? Probably. That would bring its net selling price down to £33,912 which is 'only' £13k more than the one with the Nissan badge. :hungover: :nailbiting: :wacky:
Anyone know the true percentage discount offered?

Not driven a new Navara but I can’t imagine it’s interior is anything like as nice as the Merc ?

There is a lot on none Nissan things about it

Imagine means you havent sat in the Nissan??.. it may be better and cheaper.

Of all the pickups to rebadge I am not sure why they went Nissan, maybe Ford told them to go away quickly.

As my posts says - I’ve not driven a new Navara

The Japanese are not renowned for great interiors though

The Merc is nicer inside than the Amorak driving them back to back today and VW don’t make a bad interior really

Have you got a decent price for a Navara Tekna auto? I bought one brand new last autumn on BFG at tyres, towbar etc etc for £21450+vat so the Merc is grossly overpriced. An idiot boy self opinionated farming neighbour has just bought a Merc which sums him up nicely!

That's purely a matter of taste. There's a big artificial looking plank across the dash of the Mercedes unless you want acres of brushed alloy which is probably as plastic as the 'wood'. Or you can get it with a more traditional black with more conventional, but doubtless just as effective vents, at more than £10k less money.

If you like the big slab with chrome circular vents and are willing to pay that much for them, great, they'll see you coming from a mile off.

Hopefully you can get a net price with the necessary extras, so we can compare with some accuracy.

As I linked to earlier, the Tekna is selling for £21k plus tow hitch and metallic paint currently. So about £22k with those included more or less.

The interior of the Navara is very like that of the Amarok with plenty of black plastic, but not quite as bland.
Both the Navara and Mercedes are built on the same line at Nissan's Spanish factory of course and the models mentioned here all share the same Renault diesel twin turbo mated to the Jatco seven speed automatic with part time 4wd.

The V6 is available at about an £6k premium [some extras are standard on this model] and includes full time 4wd plus a two speed transfer case.

I forgot to add the Mercedes delivery charge to its price. That'll be £600 on top of the figures I quoted.
