is the word 'mutton' off putting?

beef has the advantage in this respect.

new name for sheepmeat competition?

I'm with @Bury the Trash on this one, cow beef is not sold separately in the shops , it's just beef. The chicken industry would never market a Chick Korma, or the pig industry would never sell a piglet sausage. I think it would be a game changer if we could come up with a name for the meat from a sheep , that isn't the same name given to the appealling fluffy creatures that appear in the spring. Have always thought this is a massive marketing own goal.

I agree lamb outs of a lot of people as so accociated with cute fluffy things, I know Lenny of priolecwho would no way eat lamb for that reason

Mutton puts of others as it sounds old and tough

Above are probably the two biggest issues the sheep meat industry faces yet it’s not really something I’ve ever seen discussed before !

Trouble is how on earth can you rename an animal and expect consumers not to realise !

how about some kinda buzzword abbreviation:scratchhead:....ummm:scratchhead:....something like Mutton Is Lovely Flavour:scratchhead:......MILF for short (y)
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm: Trust you to come up with that:woot:

I agree 'mutton' has become associated with older/tougher meat - so if that rules out the English word, is there a more suitable word in Gaelic or Welsh or even an English dialect word that would be suitable to use??

Surely TFF has a big enough geographical spread to come up with something :scratchhead:

Don’t understand how wool isn’t getting more exposure these days as a sustainable, durable, eco friendly fibre either. Was watching something on the telly the other day with folks hand ringing about the carbon emissions involved in synthetic clothes production, and the resultant pollution from micro plastics excreted with every wash, I was literally shouting WOOL!!!! at the telly, but not a mention of it.

And here's the problem with rebranding - the consumer has no idea what you're on about so it costs a fortune in time, education and hard cash to get the message across.

Personally I think the problem runs a lot deeper than just the name.

Do you like the taste?

Do you like the cooking smell?

Do you think lamb represents good value?

Is lamb a family friendly meal?

Can you eat lamb without conscience twinges about it as a baby animal?

If the average consumer answers no to most of these questions, then we have a root and branch problem.

What’s your take on the solution(s)?

That we sell more to Europe. .....:facepalm:

I think that the UK Consumer for now is a lost cause. We need to focus on the younger consumer and package lamb to suit their tastes whatever that may be. Lamb needs to be seen as a more "trendy " dish, and time consuming preperation, much as we hate to say it on here, seems to be a no-no. Burgers, curries, ready meals, kebabs, blah blah blah.

However , I have a horrible suspicion that none of this is new. Lamb and the sales volumes thereof in this country will remain a knotty problem.

totally agree. Im wanting to go down the route of Hebridean sold as hoggett. according to the hebridean sheep site 'its
lean meat that's lower in cholesterol and higher in omega fatty acids' people are obsessed with healthy foods now, get a good market and youre away. Marketing is key though, organic slow grown meat from a native hebridean island will hopefully help it. Sometimes just the location of the product can be a seller

Haha, I should have clarified the challenge to ‘within the uk’!

I think you’re right on targeting the younger consumers more tho, and it’s interesting how they can rediscover things lost by the previous generation as they don’t have the same prejudices. That’s where I think a lot of the enviro/welfare stuff could find an accepting audience.
