Red Tractor - Mass Cancellation

Location

Sick to the back teeth of the whole ‘Protection Racket’ that is Red Tractor. It’s out of control and getting worse! Apparently whole life animal assurance will come in and everyone will be dragged kicking and screaming into the fold. They will not give up until everyone is brought to heel in what is a soul destroying merry go round of ever increasing and sadly self inflicted regulation! This is supposed to be an industry led scheme, but I am yet to meet a single farmer who feels it is worthwhile or that they are listened to. The whole scheme is a job creation exercise for the jobsworths at RT HQ and only benefits the processors and supermarkets who are usually the main culprits in food scares.

We have to make ourselves heard but not only at our grievances with RT but also NFU head honchos who allegedly are in bed with these lunatics. They pretend to ask for our opinion then do whatever they feel like.

How many members on TFF would back an organised mass cancellation of their RT membership? Can we get enough support to make these morons sit up and listen?

Could I join, just so I can cancel?
If you produce livestock and sell store cattle/sheep in the very near future if they get their way you won’t have a choice but to join. At present the only restraint on their power is the option to cancel menbership and sell store as opposed to fat.

Now really is not the time for the industry to be appearing to reject higher standards of welfare. It could lead to all sorts of problems with lower quality imports and no answers to the critics as we appear to of walked away from rt.
I am not suggesting walking away from the scheme, but reining in their excesses. Can you suggest a way to get them to listen to legitimate grievances?

My family farm been members since it was brought in. I cancelled it in July as I sold all my cattle in June to go travelling to New Zealand. Am home now and restocking and was contemplating re-activating my membership (had several letters whilst away asking me to re-activate). My intial rant on here follows a conversation with a friend active in NFU who told me regardless of what the members want whole life assurance for animals will be brought in. I am not advocating doing away with the scheme but more a wake up and listen to your membership protest.

It does seem RT is a bit of a racket now, just loads of paper work but not really achieving a higher standard compared to non RT.
What happens if you get rid of it though? Processors, super markets and other retailers, McDonald's etc, all now require some sort of standard/paper trail- as do most industries- so will you just end up joining a hundred different schemes if you want a large market for your produce?

It’s like Brexit.....the majority of grass roots may want it....but the elected representatives think they know better.

I have nothing againt the principle of a basic scheme as I stated earlier. Surely as our industry funds the scheme we need more control over their more hairbrained ideas?

I wonder how you manage to bring 'welfare' into this, much less "reject higher standards of welfare"? Nobody is advocating any such thing.
