VAT on derv

Storing DERV on farm very rarely makes financial sense nowadays unless you can buy in 20,000 litre tanker loads - A permanently discounted fuel card which tracks the wholesale market will be no more expensive and less liable to unidentifiable losses.

You really have to watch those card prices like a hawk though, because very often you will find them deducting more than local general pump prices.
I would agree with the above on such as UKFuels, KeyFuels etc who will try to lure you in with a "prospecting price" which they compare to national averages often including motorway services and can end up varying wildly week to week and even appearing as a higher price than posted at the pump where you draw fuel.

What you need is a price which is linked to the weekly wholesale ( PLATTS Rotterdam) price plus a fixed margin .

We have been using this system for about 5 years now and the only time I have seen pump price at a similar level has been when there is a local supermarket promotion war.

My regular discount from our local Esso station pump price is in the region of 5 to 6 ppl and I have known the discount compared to a Motorway Services station be as much as 20 pence per litre. (All prices are Ex VAT which is detailed in the bi-weekly invoice.)

If your regular routes take you past a Costco then that will be competetive.
What a palaver
I have bought derv in 1000 litre lots for 20 plus yrsand it s never dearer than pump, plus its on hand, and i never lose the vat, with losing only one pump reciept is enough to make it very worthwhile.

Bulk is King here, because it nearly always beats the pump by 2-3ppl, and it's handy.

I have a Fuel card services account. It has very good coverage of pumps in Northern Ireland and across GB if I'm travelling.

The negatives are that it's only fractionally cheaper than the pump price, and the beggars insist on weekly Invoicing and DD (despite me having an experian score of 999:scratchhead:). Four invoices to print and the cost of four DDs, when one would do.

Happy to take suggestions from you all on how and where to look for a better arrangement.

NB. Looked up @neilo suggestion of fuelgenie, but coverage is average here, basically just using Tesco and sainsbury stations. What sort of discount are you on?

We use Fuel genie fuel card fill up at supermarkets morrisons , Tescos could be more but thats all we use
get a monthly invoice by card and vehicle number so its easy to split farm and private use and no outlay on loads of expensive derv

Paying at the pump is like those folk who thinkthey are saving moneyby only putting £10 in at a time
Up here we dont have the same choice of fuel stations, and some are difficuilt to accesss with a trailer on.
Then you have the morons who block the pump while they go and pay

No discount, it gets invoiced at (supermarket) pump price. Usually fill up at Tesco or Sainsburys, where it’s the cheapest anyway. I also have a monthly account with a supplier a mile away, but it’s cheaper to drive 7 miles toTesco (usually fill up when I’m in town for something else, so not a special journey).

Whatever works for you, but I certainly wouldn’t consider the expense of putting in a bunded tank for Derv here. Enough garages nearby, or near enough that we’re passing most of the time anyway.
Used to have a Derv tank at home and ex-vat price always worked out much the same as filling at a garage tbh. Convenience of filling at home was about the only positive.

Yet the price I pay is typically 5 ppl below pump prices and no up front storage or purchase cost - next week will be at 103.42 + VAT invoiced fortinghtly and paid by DD in 3 weeks time....

Sounds excellent. Can I ask who it's with, and was it a special negotiation, with volume attached?

Fortnightly would be a step in the right direction for me at least, and don't care when it's paid. Only that it has a lower transaction cost. Do you have an annual fee?

Are they legal to install these days? Have to be bunded now, and I certainly haven’t seen any sound bunded tanks available for that money locally.

Used to have an old (pre 91) 200 gallon steel tank on blocks at home, but still no cheaper to have there than to fill in the local garage, even with derv delivered alongside decent sized drops of cherry.
The only advantage was convenience really, but that depends on how far you are from the garage and/or how often you’re passing it.

Still have a local garage that has accounts and an attendant, it’s a bit dearer that other garages but it’s all on one invoice. Then it’s not that hard to keep a few invoices in your wallet
That's how I work too, local fuel merchant with a diesel pump, they also have another satellite fuel station that you just sign for fuel and 1 invoice, on a 45 day account too :joyful::joyful::joyful:

Just fill up at local garage (independent) they send out a bill on or near to the 10th of the following month. DD is taken on the 22 of the month.
Job sorted . .. could get it cheaper at Tesco but I try not to support Tesco for anything unless I'm desperate.
