2019 Silage Season

So cutting now so they can keep feeding? But in ten day grass could double if weather right.

I cant explain it either other than people must be short of grub, they wil take what they have now hoping for another bite at the cherry, or they believe it will pish down for all of May, or another total drought, or both.

Some contractors in Wilts have apparently made silage in every month of 2019 so far!

The whole job is nuts.

I cant see this is going to be grade A silage by any means. Its had no sun really and temperatures vary from about 4 degrees of not frost to around 14 in the early afternoon. It will be low dry matter unless you manage to catch the weather nice. Be a tad damp in places as well I think.

Why is everyone so obsessed with dates? Just go by weather and crop here, looks like being a bit earlier this year as early spring and less lambs over winter. First cut sometime during May is about the only rule.

The only dates to go off are when you spread fert,if I had the grass and no fert on it I’d be cutting “ make hay while the sun shines”
