I just looked at the lower 192 which tells the story. Not much less than 45kilos tight skinned white faced lambs in Carlisle or don’t bother turning up ! Have you ever been to a prime lamb sale there?

No I haven’t, but it’s much the same everywhere. However, the retailers are the main buyers now, not exports & caterers, so the requirements will be different to a ‘normal’ time.

50-60kg hoggets have always been a bit of a niche market and can get overdone, as we saw last Spring. Everyone will howl that they make more per head, but also forget how fast they were emptying those expensive red hoppers....

I sell a lot of 35kilo plus lambs that are ready to go off grass off their mothers sometimes when the market is there. Often get laughed at but no cost and add up better than some sold 1-3 months later on feed.
Carlisle is really best for big good types.
I fear there will be people feeding hoggs overweight to try to get back into the profit. It often happens. What I don’t like is that one Hogg then ends up sold as one and a half then blocks the job up. They will still be wanted

Not meaning anything funny Guth but what other view can they have? ‘Oh yes we have had two months of lockdown but now it doesn’t matter it can go rife now until we find a vaccine’.

Wrong thread for this discussion but a 18/24 month lockdown is just not feasible.

Supermarkets are now saying this morning that they are struggling to feed 60+ million people and want opening hours extended again and social distancing rules relaxed.

Dairy farmers are now pouring millions of litres of milk away every day due to bottleneck's in the bottling etc chain.

A lot of potato farmers are drastically cutting their acreages for this season or not growing at all..

Clear where this will be heading if the LD carry's on for very long

Anyway back to prices, lets hope there is strong trade in the markets today.

Too many decisions being made in the bubble of London with no understanding of what happens in agriculture.
All of the weeks we hear about supermarket delivery vans that must keep rolling would indicate to me that they think everything just appears in a van or a shop. A supermarket is just a shed they sell things in. No production

No what they are saying if you read the actual article is that WHEN the stockpiled food has been used up, shoppers need to stop doing frequent daily shopping and go once a week, not take the whole family and be flexible about when they shop.
Old habits die hard and they need to think differently.
Maybe be able to book a slot to go into store. Queuing outside is a risk and a waste of time, I know many have got time to do that but some of us don't!

Then people buy poxy little chops, cook them, and then think lamb is dear.
it is dear but not because of the farmer, most of the time there is no need for lamb to be any more expensive on average per KG than beef if you go by the price the farmer gets, its a bit different at the moment cos lamb is up and beef is right down

People won't be killing ewe lambs now. Once it gets into April they aren't far off shearlings.

I have been seeing ewe hoggets being sold recently and still at a good price to kill, especially those around 45 kg making around £100.00 or over.

Looking ahead these still might be well sold as when the supply chains get up and running again there could be plenty of cheap chicken, pork and mince. Remember while Brexit is long forgotten, it has actually happened and when the trade talks start again and countries want to find other sources of income and protect their own markets then those tariffs might look attractive to them.

First sentence is a bit rich coming from you but it is true we will leave it there, I know there is a big picture out there And it’s a right old mess no easy answer.

When I first came onto here GUTH was an ambassador.
Now everyone seems to be having a go at him.
A fellow is entitled to his opinion.
That’s what we are all doing on here in any case airing our opinions

I don’t want to come across as having a go. I thought it was all quite balanced. I don’t mean for mine to read as nasty comments whatsoever.
