Sure training is done on autos (because nearly all new trucks are autos) but I can promise that there is a very heavy emphasis on teaching the correct usage of engine braking, retarder, etc etc.

Maybe in Sweden as I should think you have more hills. Round here (Fens) where there’s no hills there’s nothing like that. The local training centre, autos can’t be driven in manual (so you can’t changendown for engine braking) and they aren’t fitted with retarders.

Very few new trucks don't have a manual mode on the gearbox, and a retarder. Very few indeed.
Even fen based trucks leave Norfolk occasionally!

Yes, but an awful lot have the manual mode disabled and locked to eco for fuel economy. Just going on the local training school here but they certainly don’t teach any engine braking etc.

There's an argument there that says brakes are there to be used and are easy to replace during a PM should they need to be. Not used to the point of overheating you still need to be sensible but these drivers that jump on retarders, jakes and exhaust brakes all the time with the engine screaming and claim they never use the brake pedal may be in for a shock if they have to brake hard one day. That's why the automatic systems on the newer trucks use a combination of retarder and brake to slow down.
I don't know if UK fleets lock out manual mode but if they do you need to know how to drive them so it would make sense if the driving schools did the same.

As said, I can only speak for our local training school, but not once did anyone mention engine braking, retarder, exhaust brake etc. I asked how I could drop it down manually once and was told you can't. The only control you had over the box was footbrake, accelerator, and direction.
Our Scania man said 90% of new trucks are locked like this now.

It’s such a pity it’s Boxing Day.

Between yesterday’s big nosh up, and today’s leftover’s I’m full up and have no room for a big bowl of schadenfreude, even though I must say the presentation is *chefs kiss* perfect 👌
