think i would be disappointed if the main terminal sires didnt do 50% + off the ewe @12-16 weeks with lighter bone structure etc , maybe as charollais breeders we are spoiled . lol , The op did say they were dark faced so poss uk suffolks , dont kow how well they would kill out
Suffolk x lambs out of Mules wont kill out 50%.

I do not have any herdwicks lol...

Some people are deluded when it comes to killing out % and way over estimate how well their stock kill out!

I send around 1500 a year to local butchers and wholesalers and weigh every lamb/hogget.
Normally start selling when they are 10-12 weeks. These Romney x Texel lambs will start off at around 52% on a grass only diet.
Normally % won't fall below 50 until August. Then if you are not careful the % drops off rapidly and can get below 45. It is an age thing and once lambs go over around 14 weeks, unless creep fed don't die as well.

One reason Guth might be having a problem is by weighing after 11.00 am. Lambs weighed in the afternoon will always have a full belly and best to drop off 2 kg on a lamb.

51kg at £148 and 2 pure exlanas (52.5kg) at £136.

Would have been better on the hook this week, even at those weights... :censored:

(only a farmer could moan after selling hoggets at £148! 🤣 )

I finally got to checking the email for the cull ewes I took in on Monday last night.
Charollais ewes at £187, a couple of Highlanders at £129 and nine pure Exlanas at £90. I didn’t even top the market with the Charollais, whose better flock mates had done so at £163 a couple of weeks ago.

Total was £4500 after stoppages for a trailer of 36 sheep. A good day at the office.:)

That is a very good day at the office! I always think if you can clear £100 per animal sent it’s a good enough day at rate we are heading I’m gonna have too up my expectations [emoji23]

When selling springers live (which for is the only way we sold them pretty much forever) we were always lead to believe after June/July time "these lambs aren't dying like they were.." as just general market knowledge, obviously put about by the buyers. For various reasons we had a season selling on the hook and realised it was in fact complete rubbish and creep fed lambs will invariably always kill out at 50% right through. These were charollais out of suffolk x mules. Out of texel/beltex type ewes would obviously be better still.

Are the Exlanas usually worth so much less than the Highlanders?
