I missed that message - was that one from NHS England only? Certainly didn't see it up here.

Otherwise, nothing you've written contradicts the assertion that properly worn face coverings/ masks can help reduce virus transmission.
It does actually.... Who is more likely to spread the virus, a symtomatic person in a mask in Tesco or symptomatic person self isolating at home?

Please try and understand.. it's not what they do, it's the message and what people believe that is important.

It's not what you think people do with masks or what they could do, it's what they actually do.

And the changes in behaviour they encourage.

Let me know when you get there

Will wearing a mask in a corn bin result in less inhalation of dust or more ?

I understand that perfectly. A properly worn mask is a positive thing, but a badly worn one can have some detriment. The government also understands that, but also has some far more competent psychologists, risk analysts and virologists on their books than this forum does. These people met and assessed all the factors and concluded that masks had a positive effect on balance, even with idiots who didn’t wear them properly.

I’ve had dinner with a former chief scientific officer, I understand the precautionary principle and how these guys work and frankly I respect a decision they make as being far more sensible than a farmer from Essex or anywhere else.

Nothing of the downsides you come up with is news to those that make the decisions, and yet on balance they have collectively advised the opposite - with far more data available than you have. Let me know when you get there.

They haven’t, and the studies are very clear on that. They don’t provide absolute protection (what does?), but worn and handled properly they do give a level of mitigation for person/person transmission by capturing of droplets from infected wearers.
An FFP3 mask will give pretty much 100% protection to the user if trained properly and even an FFP2 is pretty good.

When you understand that advice follows policy not the other way round, you realise the need to think for yourself.
