Ineos Grenadier and Land Rover Defender

The D5 is a monocoque.
Double cabs almost always have a seperate chassis and I cannot think of a single 1 ton pickup that sells in the UK that is a monocoque. No half and half's. This may change in future. The new small Ford available in the USA and ditto the Honda Ridgeline are monocoque but they neither carry a ton nor are available in the UK or indeed Europe.

Ah, I stand corrected 👍

Actually didn’t realise the Chinese had any involvement with Land Rover…….Grenadier gets my vote then 👍
Do they? I would not take that at face value. Tata is Indian and India is not at all on good terms with China. Indeed they are quietly at war across a large border area.
However, it is inevitable that both Tata and JLR, like absolutely every modern car company in the world buys some components from Chinese companies and you can bet with 100% certainty that Grenadier will contain Chinese parts, particularly electronic components.

When one of em make summat like a HCPU, I'll look a it.

I need a truck that'll pull 3.5 tonne of cattle (or quite a bit more when no-ones looking), a 28' long sawmill, carry 2 round bales(4')/2 dumpys of cake or spent wrap/ a big square bale.
We load firewood with a telehandler bucket, and I expect it to be able to receive that.

Of the modern stuff, the nearest might've been a RHD single cab amorak (with uprated suspendies for the tow weight I recall being told by VW)
But they didn't do it.

I can't see how this mythical beast needs be £50k, but it isn't about the money.
I'd rather keep em new, but I've put a galv chassis on my 03 hcpu, because it delivers. Anything else would be a step back.

Chery Jaguar Land Rover are a large shareholder of Tata and build Evoques and Disco Sports at their Changsu plant. Don't think British car manufacturers actually exist apart from very small specialist companies. :(

There seems to be some confusion about what makes a company or, more specifically a product British [or choose your country]. In fact there are legal definitions as our exporting manufacturers are about to find out if they export to the EU. For instance Nissan Sunderland is a British company itself, as distinct from Nissan Japan, and is invited to competitively tender to build vehicles. If it doesn't tender competitively, the manufacturing goes to another Nissan factory and since there are no others in the UK, that means to France, Spain, or further east. To be classed as a British car for export the Nissan [or any other product] has to have a minimum British built content. That is why they were desperate to have a battery factory in the UK, otherwise content would be under the limit and high import taxes would be levied on their cars entering the EU.
Not sure what the UK content of JLR's Discovery and Defender is but the engine is the only major British built content that I can think of off hand. So I class these as being Slovakian while their other products are British as well as the cars Nissan build in Sunderland, even though their current engines and gearboxes are imported before cars are assembled

The Grenadier seems to be the defender that most farmers complained JLR were not building

So I expect it to be hated my most on here ! probably for no good reason whatsoever

it’s British and looks great to me, seems to be a sensible price vs COMPARABLE NEW alternatives ( not a used Toyota hilux etc !) Seriously what’s not to like ?
Would've been British if built here?

There would be a higher chance of it being British but I actually doubt it in strict terms. This is because it was proposed that the chassis and body panels were to be imported from Portugal while the engines and transmission would be made and pre-assembled in Germany [BMW and ZF] while the axles would also inevitably have been imported. That just leaves the wheels, possibly the radiators and HVAC and bits of trim to be sourced from UK suppliers, plus the actual final assembly. That would not be enough to classify it as British to avoid import taxes for export to the EU. That's as I understand it. If anyone has a more definitive view on this, let's hear it.

Yes, tempted by the Grenadier. But not until it has been available for 2-3 years, all the gremlins sorted out and the Company making it still doing so and still in business themselves.

I like the new Defender, but for too much over-the-top electrical stuff that will never get used and probably go wrong!
I think your thinking is correct, wait until the Grenadier actually appears, then wait a few years to see how it actually performs. The downside of this could be that by then the price will be much higher . I wonder if you can sign up for one now, pay for it at the start price and take delivery in say 2024.

I was thinking a Mog 🤣👍
too heavy, clumsy cant manouver .reversve easy with box etc and not tight enough turning ,too expensive. doesnt need all that to pull 3 to 4 tonne

i always think of something based on or around a current 100hp 4cyl.turbo 2wd with brakes all round with high geared final drives etc. etc needs mot and could run on derv. 2 or 3 seats as well of course ,and stowage space.
jcb could build one easy, like a compact fasttrack.

Will it be much higher? Sometimes once the initial launch is over there are discounts to be had. Discounts already available on the new defender apparently
