Problem with that is if you buy a wrong un you are well and truly screwed.Only the odd tup. You can afford to be more picky when you're only buying 1 every few years instead of several every year

Aw, come on. Everyone likes a pic of a new purchase! And you think they'll be daft enough to admit it with you lot.
I bought three at Kelso a few years back, Hampshires and a Southdown, and I would have to say they lasted well. But wouldn't be pushed like some.I am going up, need a stock tup ( beltex) and a texel to go onto my mules. Every year swear I am not going back as it’s a pee poorly organised set up, queuing to pay, queuing for the taxis but contrary to what is said on here my tips seem to last well from there. Last Beltex bought in 2019 still going strong ( tempting fate I know).
One or two of my customers selling tups and I do like to buy from customers if possible.
This forage caper is overdone,if they are fodder beet and cabbage reared you are near as well with a hopper reared.Like I keep saying though, other people feeding is what gives your marketing edge, if everyone went 100% forage reared you become one of many.
Only if a certain Miss Macgregor takes the photo ,she can make most things look a million dollars.Aw, come on. Everyone likes a pic of a new purchase!
No I think if you buy the rolling fat extreme types you get what you deserve. It helps to know the farm alsoI bought three at Kelso a few years back, Hampshires and a Southdown, and I would have to say they lasted well. But wouldn't be pushed like some.
And she doesn't look too bad herself! This forage caper is overdone,if they are fodder beet and cabbage reared you are near as well with a hopper reared.

Couldn’t agree more, cant see the difference between hard pushed with cake or ad lib turnips on a kind lowland farm. The amount of energy/ protein consumed will be the sameThis forage caper is overdone,if they are fodder beet and cabbage reared you are near as well with a hopper reared.

He is talking about Beltex,I have never had one but speaking to those who have they seem to boast about them seeing the end of the first season and having worked. It's a bit of a worry when getting two seasons out of a tup is seen as something to be celebrated.

It’s one of the things you have to tolerate if you want your name in the paper.I realise that. It’s a pretty poor show, by all accounts.
There is a reason you never see an old beltex in the fatI realise that. It’s a pretty poor show, by all accounts.
No…look bring the best genetics here and see what happens.No. The best genetics.
My experience of breeding our own and selling the surplus is that we tended to sell the ones who were easier to sell and used the others…Only the odd tup. You can afford to be more picky when you're only buying 1 every few years instead of several every year

The stratified sheep system worked well for years, until some of the main components were knackered by cosmetic nonsense.I always think breeding females are best bought from up hill and moved down, old fashioned maybe .
