Starter Motor Power

Looking at a new starter motor for a tractor - I have the option of a 3.2kw or a 4.2kw by the look of it. Both seem identical in spec other than one is physically a bit longer than the other.

Assuming there is physical space on the side of the engine, does it matter which I fit?

@ACEngineering - I'd welcome your advice, a price too if possible please. It's to fit a Massey Ferguson 6290 which has a standard Iskra starter currently. I think the part number is 3823621M96.

I will have a look, if thats a perky engine then i would use either of them part numbers! not cause they are crap just because i use a different one, There are several numbers that are basically the same thing :X3:

Piggybacking on this...
Credit where it's due.
I've a wheezy old JD 6330, which (since it's been here) has always been a pig to start in cold weather.
Against advice from main dealer, and local JD 'expert' (who assured me the answer to the cold starting issue was an engine rebuild).....
I got @ACEngineering to locate a Mahle starter for it.
Hey presto, the old bus starts fine.
(it's still a breathy donk with 9000 hours on it, but once warmed up, goes like a beaut.)

top marks, top man.

Thanks for flagging this up again @egbert

@ACEngineering has sorted me out the right Mahle 4.2kw geared started for my 6290 which is due to be fitted tomorrow. I’ll be pleased to have a reliable starter on it again, and am looking forward to testing out the geared starter.

I’ve got a 6490 that like your 6330 has been a sluggish starter and I’ve always put it down to the Tier 3 engine. Since buying a second one that starts easily it has made me think that the starter on that could be tired.

Tested it this afternoon - the battery voltage on the new one dropped to 9.6v when cranking. Tried the old one and it dropped down to 7.7v and cranked over for 3-4 seconds before firing. Clearly there’s a bit of a difference there so will likely be changing that one before long too.

I don't have the tech knowledge, but decided I'd give it a go after reading a thread or two here.

Local JD dealer assured my spanner man that reduction gear starters were no good, as they don't last.
Well seeing as their own brand starter was dragging the battery to death every day, i'm interested to see what happens.

I note my spannerman and i couldn't get the heater element to spark up - seemingly because the computer says it ain't cold enough.
I wonder if someone with the software can gee that up a bit....although alls well now anyway so I'm not very interested.

I wonder what your JD dealer would say about the JD tractors that have the mahle gear reduction fitted from factory  :ROFLMAO:

Interestingly the local vap agent offers two starters for International tractors, a cheap gear reduction one and a heavy duty conventional one at twice the price. Probably the Deere agent should have said crappy gear reduction starters don't last.....
Having fitted and used a quality gear reduction to a manitou with a dour perkins it transformed starting, threw it over like bump starting a tractor at 15mph.

The likely hood is vap do sell a gear reduction mahle to fit but don't actually list it for that model. happy to have a go at finding one for you if you post details. The cheaper Jubana starters vap sell are not crappy, they look odd and cheap but they are not bad, the jubana 4.2kw isn't as good as the mahle though as i tried one on a merc engined manitou to compare and it only lasted 6 months BUT the mec is very heavy on starters so didn't surprise me IMO.

all the 3,2kw jubana's i have sold have been fine

The starter motor in question is on an an International 454, same starter as fitted to 674, 784, 785 etc. It chews a starter every 2 or three years or so, probably because the block is knackered and it has been running air cooled for 12 years......

Supplied this one before for that application. 3.2kw gear reduction Iskra/mahle, can be got from vap just not listed for a 454 but the starter they do list crosses to this one. Vap dont stock it but they will special order it, i would probably use a different supplier though not vap on this this one.

My John Deere 6900 may benefit from a new starter mine seems a bit lazy so what sorta price would a decent starter be please @ACEngineering

I will have a better look when i get home as ever my first easy place to look is vapormatic site and they list 3, a cheap nasty one and then 2 iskras but they are different hands left or right :ROFLMAO: :banghead:

Which side is the starter as your sat on the seat and do you have a part number off the old one or locate one on the JD portal which will help narrow the options down easier.
