Foresight Obesity System Map

I agree, but those peo0le get fat on ultra processed food. Tax the source, not the result. What was interesting at OFC was that Henry Dimbley and his team could not work out a way to put a tax on ultra processed foods.

Tax is not the answer. If it is proven that something is doing society harm that something needs to be stopped. Outright bans.

Fresh food is gst (vat) free here. Was a big stink about it when brought in.... no one bats an eyelid now as it isn't noted on packaging... I'm sure if supermarkets were made to note the price plus the tax, some would think twice.

That makes a lot more sense.

VAT (and duty, where applicable) on items that are luxuries.

I do think the UK should have a national health/fitness program. It should be encouraged by employers.

I also think 7 day working should be all but done away with.

Sad but Good point .

and Vascular dementia is more common than we know about i reckon.

only thing is with the Parkinson's type ive seen a few cases of is that the chemicals we come in to contact with can cause dementia as well in not obese or uneducated people .
Having to use op's and (voluntarily) MMA welding and many others that are out there are big causes as well we mustn't forget and i guess the combination of all those factors will be the source of it as well, slightly more difficult to diagnose.
Education yes but even when we know all the whys and wherefores should we live wrapped in cotton wool or without certain 'enjoyments ' ?

Dementia, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, heart disease. Could potentially cure or prevent all of them but how long exactly do you want to live for?

good. I'll tell the cows they have the weekend off from now on 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

It wasn't that long ago that Sunday in the UK you would struggle to find much open as everything was shut. It was better for family life I think.

Should do what France does as well, no HGV movements on weekends.

And ban gambling of all kinds. That idiot Blair made that legal.

The government have known about the link between obesity and covid from the begining.

In summer 2020 so 18 ish months ago I was shearing for a bariatric doctor (fat people doctor) who was very excited as the government was launching a new initiative that day to combat obesity which would also help with the 'pandemic'.

I avidly watched the news that evening and yep you guessed it not a single mention.

Don't need your life story again just the dietary advice please. What can/should we be eating?
The main point was to cut down on Saturated Fat ,in particular, processed foods containing high levels of saturated fats, trans-fats, sugars and salt , throw away the frying pan,
I think you all know what you should be eating,
I cook and shop for myself in the week , I only have about 3
supermarket aisles I go down
Fruit Veg and Salad , Meat Fish Eggs,
Foods that have come direct from a farm ,
I never go down any aisle that contains things like Crisps Chocolate , Fizzy Drinks Biscuits Ready made meals ,
I'm no expert , I get my advice from Doctors and their professional staff , not from Google and Internet Forums

Ah that's where I can't agree with you. I do fry my eggs in the morning ( in butter) as it's quicker than poaching.

I am trying to kick my chocolate addiction though. Don't do fizzy drinks or biscuits any more.

Your just eating normal foods, meat, fish, fruit and veg 👍.

...At the beginning of the 20th century, cardiovascular disease (CVD) was responsible for fewer than 10% of all deaths worldwide. Today, that figure is about 30%, with ≈80% of the burden now occurring in developing countries (Figure 1). In 2001, CVD was the No. 1 cause of death worldwide.1–3 This article reviews the epidemiological transition that has made CVD the leading cause of death in the world, assesses the status of the transition by region, and shows the regional differences in the burden of CVD...

It's a very complex picture.
Yes, but what killed most people.....A couple of big skirmishes might have had something to do with people not living long enough to get heart disease....Hard to compare then to now when there's so many variables not taken into account.

The proof is the problem though. They’ve been trying to prove saturated fat causes heart disease for decades, still not managed it for some reason.

In another area, they’re desperate to start taxing cattle and sheep because they think their methane is warming the planet. The accepted view is wrong so they’ll never to actually be able to prove it, but I bet it doesn’t stop them trying it shortly.

Thing is, what you're describing there sounds almost identical to what a lot on here are so interested in. Low sugar and starchy carbs, your aversion to saturated fat is your particular tweak which if you’re happy with who’s to argue?

So is processed food the problem? Or more importantly a seditary lifestyle the reason? I think the latter has a bigger effect . No one needed to go to a gym 100 years ago....
It’s both. Exercise is what we’re designed to do, it’s only the last few decades many of us have become seriously sedentary. Trouble is, a majority of people think that doing some exercise allows them to eat crap and it’ll all be ok. You can’t outrun a bad diet.

Agreed , and if you do regular exercise you feal the benefit of healthy eating , that encourages you to eat healthy food even more

A friend of mine who is a very experienced Personal Trainer, athletics & netball coach & who owns her own gym, always says “you can’t out run a bad diet”
In regards to weight loss / obesity, she has always said it’s about 30 % exercise / activity & 70% what you put in your mouth.

Doesn’t matter how hard you work or exercise, an unhealthy diet is an unhealthy diet.
