Getting paid for straw ?

What sort of idiot doesn’t pay Clive bailye? One of the biggest gobs in the industry!
I’m guessing the type of person who doesn’t feel the need to quash their insecurities seeking likes on an Internet forum or ‘retweets’ on Twitter.

in all seriousness, I am really surprised that Clive, given the persona he portrays (I.e a successful farmer and business man) hasn’t taken more due diligence with a new customer. When I was a Director of a small company, if I had hired a contractor without doing PQQ’s, or agreed to undertake work without getting at least one credit reference and trade reference (I have been asked to ask for two sets of accounts off some before now) then I would have been for the high jump. Not saying it solves everything, but if this chap had done it to Clive twice he will have done it to others.

To be honest, I have no sympathy if Clive hasn’t done due diligence, and to come on here and slag Livestock men off, when it seems to me it’s his own ineptitude (am happy to be corrected) is a bit churlish and petulant, in my experience those seeking to blame others usually know they have made a mistake, spending a day with a toddler is a good lesson in basic human behaviour.

He said straw buyer I don’t think he’s slagging off livestock farmers.
always here far more stories of non payments, going bust, agreements broken more with straw than anything else.
But agree we only do straw with a couple of people we trust it’s not a game I would want to play with. The straw selling groups on Facebook are pretty horrendous!
We don’t do much though as there’s too much risk vs reward for us in the east. Only really do it for an agronomic reason.

First post pretty much vicariously implicated Livestock farmers, as did you saying they ‘plead poverty’. But perhaps being a Livestock farmer I am being overly sensitive…

Unfortunately in all walks of life there are people that are not for boys to play with. A bit of due diligence can help to sniff them out. Sadly for Clive thats a bit like shutting the door after the horse had bolted.

I’ve very consciously not named anyone and although i have a current issue the title of this thread is more general in that “why is it only straw buyers i have ever had debt issues with? “

I’ve dragged some to small claims court in the past, it’s ALWAYS straw though !

from replies it does seem I’m not alone in this !

no - i’ve said several times its a contractor / merchant buyer

i’m often asked by livestock farmers why we are so keen to chop straw and my first post explained this was the reason maybe

Decided that I would try, so stuck “Clive Bailye Twitter straw” into google. Amusingly, this was the third result:

The one above that was a tweet from @Clive in April 2018 which started “Sometimes farmers need protecting from themselves”.

yep - i should learn / take my own advice shouldn’t I !

won’t happen again, will sell at auction to the highest bidder where i believe buyers have to pay up front ?

always straw though isn’t it ? nothing else we do or sell ever involves chasing payment for months

Well that’s not true. Maybe it’s straw for you, but plenty arable farmers seem to have longer pockets than arms too.

Back to your problem though - have you initiated legal action yet or are you just whinging?

hand on heart its true here - the only things i have ever had to chase long overdue payment on in 25yrs of being in business is straw and on one occasion some entitlements sold to a TFF member who decided he didn’t need to pay (small claims court decided he did !)
