Least amount ever sold at Blandford straw sale, chop, chop, chop. No demand it seems. WB at £35 acre
We were only looking for around half of what we normally buy at our local auction. Got a fair bit (far more than normal) left over from last year & a lot more cubicles gone in. I can’t imagine we’re the only ones.Least amount ever sold at Blandford straw sale, chop, chop, chop. No demand it seems. WB at £35 acre
Many of the least efficient straw users will be the ones who are cashing out of livestock, the previous year’s high prices being part of the decision. Those who are carrying on have done as you have. There will be WB crops in this area along with oats that combines will struggle to chop they are so thick if it ends up a damp timeWe were only looking for around half of what we normally buy at our local auction. There will be straw stacked everywhere come September. Plenty of people baling with no market in place. We were only looking for around half of what we normally buy at our local auction. Just wish we had more shed space to capitalise on it. Seems to be more straw in the auctions & more farmers who don’t normally grow corn have put a field or two in.There will be straw stacked everywhere come September. Plenty of people baling with no market in place.
i bet there will be you would have to deliver it for free for some folk ! even then thered begruge the time bedding them down. my old boy always said well bed half fed!....shouldn't be so many dirty cattle in market this winter !
What reserve though? Some WB standing straw locally failed to sell locally in North Devon
I gave a free lorry and drag of the stuff to a very good customer a few years ago, he said ‘thanks but it doesn’t soak up like SB’,Some WB standing straw locally failed to sell locally in North Devon

Yep, if you can't beat um, join them. , I'm pulling more heifers out from the fat shed to put to the bull and buying more weaned calves. The poor arable man at the mercy of the
livestock farmers again.
So are we and lots of others ,will be a glutYep, if you can't beat um, join them. , I'm pulling more heifers out from the fat shed to put to the bull and buying more weaned calves.
They've invented this thing at the back of the combine ,I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Us livestock farmers are doing you all a favour by tidying up all those byproducts you leave lying around your fields. We should probably be paid to take it off your hands
Are they not awfully hard on fuel and leave a trail of chopped straw which takes a lot of nitrogen to break down and also encourages a lot of slugs . I could be wrong though…..They've invented this thing at the back of the combine ,
I think it's called a straw chopper.
