What is chopped wheat straw worth in p&k and at fertilizer prices as they are at the moment as opposed to baling it.

free calculator. yield is the grain yield not the straw yield.
i put a grain yield 9t/Ha at TSP £883/t MOP £683 june 2022 prices,
result, removing straw was going to cost £60/Ha. So if straw yield is 5t/Ha thats £12/t in nutrient replacement.
£20t baling cost?
so £32 before you even see a potential profit. then add cost of baling compaction ect.

bet someone buys that this year! ive only got 20 acres of wheat straw surplus to our own needs. so i wont be loosing big money.

Which part of Devon are you?
We are chopping the lot this year. Straw merchants are offering £40-£45/t loaded and want to collect it as they require it rather than move it to their own stores to keep their costs down. This means we loose the tops and bottoms so reality is it’ll be paying probably £10/t less so the chopper is serviced and will be on all harvest. I’m part of a combinable crop discussion group and at last Thursday meeting a simple show of hands created about 8,000 acres of chopping this year. We all normally bale to put that into perspective. About 2,000 ac would be baled. If that’s reflective of the whole country then 80% less.

Looks like a scarcity looming. Maybe better bale and keep it till Christmas.
Certainly won’t detract. Might not help all that much though
No advice needed where it’s ploughed you won’t notice and if it’s spread we’ll be ok for stubble turnips I’d guess but may well encourage slugs. Chopped barley straw is worse. Are you cultivating before turnips?
We will cultivate and combi drill for stubble turnips
If I tedded out the swaths, would barley straw rot down, and be ploughable by next spring ? No chopper here either.

Bale it and keep it if you can. I am chopping wheat but I think barley will always sell later on

barley straw always seems to break down very quickly here, in comparison to wheat . . .

There won’t be a shortage because there’s loads of straw still in stock from last harvest. Plenty of sheds full.
