Had three farmers asking if i wanted more straw as they are snowed under with it. Some poor crops about but the good fields have produced bumper crops of straw which has more than made up for the poorer ones. Straw isnt going to be dear, cattle arent eating it in any quantity either in this heatCan’t give it away atm
Doesn’t look massiveView attachment 1055762Massive crops of barley straw here.
Didn't look big on the picture (story of my life )Doesn’t look massive
Alot of farms in Devon are feeding a full winter ration, me included and one has told me his grub will run out before Christmas, could be the longest winter in ages.Had three farmers asking if i wanted more straw as they are snowed under with it. Alot of feeding going on around here too and i would think fodder trade will have improved no end but it isnt going to effect straw price . Cattle dont like eating fresh straw either. When we get rain we could have a fantastic flush of autumn grass. Only people talking up straw trade are those trying to sell it, theres oceans of the bloody stuff about.Alot of farms in Devon are feeding a full winter ration, me included and one has told me his grub will run out before Christmas, could be the longest winter in ages.
Will certainly pay to store straw this year.Cattle aren’t keen on eating it this time of year, but they will in the autumn as a buffer to wet grass and with a protein additive in the winter.Chances of a good late cut now are receding by the day.Alot of feeding going on around here too and i would think fodder trade will have improved no end but it isnt going to effect straw price . According to the fruits and berries its going to be short kind winter if the converse is true about the old wives tale of lots of them meaning a hard long winterAlot of farms in Devon are feeding a full winter ration, me included and one has told me his grub will run out before Christmas, could be the longest winter in ages.
Was thinking about that this morning there will be acres all at the same growth stage when it rainsAlot of feeding going on around here too and i would think fodder trade will have improved no end but it isnt going to effect straw price . if we have a 'stress' summer, whether drought, late frost etc, all berried plants, will set more fruit, for the next year, natures way of ensuring the survival of that plant.According to the fruits and berries its going to be short kind winter if the converse is true about the old wives tale of lots of them meaning a hard long winter

So wheat will set more berries ?if we have a 'stress' summer, whether drought, late frost etc, all berried plants, will set more fruit, for the next year, natures way of ensuring the survival of that plant.
wheat is no longer a fully natural plant, it already produces to the maximum of its ability, stress events on 'farm developed' plants, usually decrease yield. So wheat will set more berries ?
looks like high demandDemand for hay must be going up. Baled last night straight out with the sheep this morning. View attachment 1056158
