Great that BFU is gaining new members.

However they will not attract new members by the numbers they need/should be doing so by only letting people know what they are doing/ what they stand for etc etc only after you have joined up!

They certainly need to open up the BFU section for non members to be able to read what they are doing etc, quite why they have not done this after being operating so long is beyond me, of course non members should not be allowed to post on the BFU section on this forum but no reason at all why non BFU members should not be able to read what the BFU is doing, if they opened up more to non members they will certainly gain members a lot quicker!

Also the BFU should be getting members to attend livestock markets etc handing out baseball caps/ pens/ note pads etc with the BFU logo and website address on them!

Also the BFU founding members can only do so much so perhaps they need to employ someone to handle the basic day to day things like members handing out BFU flyers/ pens etc whilst the founding members concentrate on policy etc issues.

And they need to increase membership fees to something like £25 a year.
Good comments made by you @gone up the hill , it's very difficult when it's a fledgling organisation to get going , however, in just over 12mths the BFU have succeeded in negotiating various things on behalf of all farming sectors . This has happened by farmers giving up valuable time .
A full page advert was taken out in the FW ,paid for by the steering committee members own money ( no cost to BFU) , leaflets designed and printed , paid for by individual members ( no cost to BFU )
Steering committee members have travelled to various parts of the country at their own expense (ie no cost to BFU )

I agree subscriptions are too low at £10 and this ,at sometime , will need reviewing as the workload increases and expenses incurred .
I am at a loss to understand how many are sitting back and criticising the BFU when it's got as far as it has with limited funds .
All sectors of the Ag industry will gain from the work the BFU have achieved with little funds ..... £10 ...surely this isn't going to break the bank of anyone's pocket but a hundred tenners is a grand and that will help publicity vastly .
In Hereford we have put leaflets in various outlets in recent weeks but unfortunately a ' known member of a different ' farming union has been and removed them ......that's the sort of childish things that happen !

Please chip in your tenner and join up and help out !

i’m not interested how many insurance discounts they facilitate to countryside members - how many ACTUAL farmers ? a loss of 18,000 in 2 years should be a BIG alarm bell however …… at that rate my maths says they have zero members within 3 years !

i don’t know how may bfu members there are, i do know im one of them however and i do know they are gaining members not loosing them
Can't help thinking the dead tractor is the main reason NFU have lost so many members.

Helpful as ever Clive! @neilo you asked about numbers, NFU from memory have gone from 67000 to 49000 since 2022. I stand to be corrected gladly by any person that can be bothered to prove me wrong.

Where does that figure come from? I’ve never seen any membership figures, other than those put up in various posts on here which usually seem to have been conjured up from thin air.

Like much on social media, those spurious numbers are then taken as gospel by the next poster, in this case @Clive extrapolating to suggest the NFU won’t exist in 3 years time…🤐

But yes, I would be surprised if the NFU hadn’t lost a good few members in the last 2 years, if only it was those in this echo chamber that claim to have resigned.

That’s the second time I’ve seen you post that. At the time placing that advert (& an FG advert that never happened) was being discussed, several ‘normal’ members posted to say they were chipping in extra to help pay for it. I do hope the others that posted that followed through as well.
It would be nice if it were noted that it wasn’t just steering group members that paid for it. :)

That really is poor form imo.

What about creating a just giving page which states BFU's short term aims, grievances and ultimate objectives.
Make sure the general public know how the money will be used and why it had
to be set up .If you did this i would happily donate more than a tenner and i have
a feeling others would do so too.

Clive, you own TFF, you're an influential person and an NFU member, TFF hosts BFU. You of all people could answer the figures more accurately than any of us could estimate most likely. Hopefully the drastic loss of NFU members will ring alarm bells before its subsides completely.

i’m. not a nfu member - i left 8 years ago over red tractor

i do not know how many members bfu has - I’m just a member

As owner of TFF i have a duty under GDPR not share detail or data about any member or organisation that uses this forum

Thankyou . If ' non committee ' members made a donation then that's good news ...very good news! . Hopefully we can get clarification on it .
Yes it's the second time I've posted it ...no apology for that as It appears to have not been noted by all that the steering committee are getting the advertising out and I feel that a lot has been, and is being, done . There are very active non committee members getting on board now and that's great news .

....at no point do I wish to give out misleading information 👍

I hope you get what I'm trying to say ....
We are careful with our limited funds !

Good idea ... Will pass it on to the SG .
We are looking at a donations link on our website as a few would like to donate 😊

I offered to pay for one but at the time it was felt the money would be better spent elsewhere. But gladly pay for a full page if needed, anything to help get the word out.

Where do you get that 20% figure from? The only post I’ve seen purporting to put numbers on NFU membership is @warksfarmer ’s made up ones where, when questioned, he posts up an anti-NFU report from 2016.🤐

I somehow doubt they’ve lost 20% of members this year, despite what the echo chamber might like to believe.
I don't know how many have left NFU. A poster on here this last week said their branch sec said 5,000 lost this last 12 months. Which would be closer to 10+% loss??

My word. Shame on whoever that was.

Was a mix of donations between steering committee members and normal members, but most (all??) SC members donated.

At the time I was only person with access to PayPal account, so I was person who had sight of where donations were coming from.

Possibly even more numbers of donations from normal members iirc. Ranged from £5 to c. £300, with some offering £1,000, but we asked those to donate smaller amounts as we thought that was too much for individuals.

We'll reprimand Hfd Cattle for not paying attention 🤣

Not a made up report at all.

But on another thread (not sure which one but I’m sure somebody will know) a group secretary had admitted 5000 members quit nationally over the last 12 or 18 months.
