Row cleaners on 750A

err, my experience with row cleaners . . . ( being zero till since the mid 90's )
I've only used them on summer crop row crop planters on 1m row spacings. Sometimes they do a brilliant job & are the only reason you can do a good job. Other times they just tend to "bulldoze" the stubble in front of them & cause more problems than they are worth.
I have never used them in narrow row spacings, but I would tend to think that the results could vary greatly depending on soil / straw / moisture conditions. With narrow row spacings ( we plant wheat etc on 333mm spacing, I'm assuming you are a lot narrower, like half of that ) I would imagine that at times they could throw straw across into the next row, causing more problems. Unfortunately, like most things to do with zero till, there is no such thing as "one size fits all". What works one year, or in one field, may not work in another

Personally, I wouldn't consider mounting them on my 333mm spacing single disc planter. I run a RTK auto steer system, so find planting between the rows far more effective. Dunno how that would go on 150mm row spacings though . . .

FFS. If you are having to put row cleaners on a 750A you are using the drill in the wrong conditions. You should be using a tine drill instead.
@Clive alludes to this in posts #3 & #5.

its not quite so black / white IMO

I have the luxury of a tine or disc drill but not every farm can carry 2 drills and even with 2 there are times when both need to work at the same time, adding row cleaners simply adds to my options

Given the low cost of S/H Horsch COs compared to anything you'll see for small at LAMMA i don't regard having a second tine drill as a luxury purchase, they're more from the "essentials" range.

they are great value but the 2 drill route is not for everyone and even with both options here there are times when workload dictates I need them running at the same time

I think there are a lot of times when the disc would do a better job with row cleaners even if they are not the difference between complete success or failure - trash spread is a big issue at 40ft so anything that helps that should translate into better results

I'm hoping that the row cleaners will just do a bit more clearing the straw in areas where the combine drops a double overlap or has backed up. I'm still not intending to drill second cereals into chopped straw in the autumn, but sometimes still find even when spring drilling, there is the odd thicker patch of chopped straw still lying around. If 80% of the field is ok for the 750 and I can improve the other 20% surely this is a better bet than using a tine drill over the whole field?

@Clive - Did you go ahead with these, if so any feedback, if not is it still in the pipeline? Thanks

Yes going ahead with some as are a few others here, unfortunately they couldn't be shipped to the uk in time for this autumn so an order is being put together that will be here in plenty of time for spring

They will be available to order on farm marketplace later this week for a 3 week period along with other products from bpr engineering in Aus like their seed boots and bolt kits etc. Then orders will close and they will ship together to keep costs down

Will update this thread when they are open for order

Could be interested as well.

Have sent e-mails awating replies

I think you are missing the point. Row cleaners may mean that a tine drill isn't needed. Surely it is easier and more efficient to have just the one drill. Esp on a limited acreage.

Just be aware that with the non greaseable bush kits that you will need something like a porta power to be able to press the old bushes out and new ones in. It is not a 5 minute job for the unskilled. Over here Collin offers a service that involves coming to your farm with 2 men and the right gear to do the job.

I've replaced those bushes before on an older drill and it was straight forward with coulters off the machine and a press

Not a 5min job though ! Nothing is on a 750a

Just a quick reminder that we will be closing order on these early next week. Think we have 5 sets ordered at the moment, so if anyone else wants to place an order, please do so by close of play Monday.
