EU threatens to ban UK ag and food exports to them

Actually, the UK needs to ensure its Nuclear Arms are state of the art to avoid being bitch sapped by anyone.

To the ones who feel our nuclear subs et al should be disbanded - need to check themselves... And sign into a looney bin....

We Must, keep our Nuclear Deterant to the highest order - No Argument...

In my view, the view for the UK having a separate nuclear deterrent during the Cold war was weaker than it is today. Far far more uncertain world today than in the 70s or 80s.

That, of course has not been proved at all, any more than US military contracts are used to subsidise Boeing.
Do try again with something of more substance and relevance. I did think that you were employed in some kind of legal profession. Perhaps I am mistaken in this. Almost certainly in fact, since you cannot see the gravity of what the PM is doing with his proposed breaking of a recently signed legal agreement, a consequence of which is that he breaks the Good Friday Agreement as well, which has even wider repercussions.

Nothing stopping the EU from spending loads of money on defence. Only they don't have the money.

Defence contracts are not on the table for trade discussions, they never have been.

I find the nuke talk hilarious...

In case you havent noticed...what you need is a good virus in your back pocket for a rainy day...

Nukes are old news.... highly ineffective.

A virus and fiscal clout are the weapons of choice...EU China and USA have....most others don't so u need to be on a team.

Ant...

Nukes highly ineffective?

Ok, so you would prefer the West had none and that Iran and North Korea did?

Come off it. Nuclear weapons are so effective you don't ever need to use them.

Very unlikely, it all depends how long it takes to get a trade deal with others, however starting on WTO terms puts you on the back foot from day one and does not leave you in a very strong negotiating position.

What are you on about?

You harp on about how the WTO is meaningless, yet dozens of countries are signed up to it?

The UK consumer market is vast. The government has intimated at length that it will be looking to extend bilateral free trade deals with interested parties. I can't write that more times than I already have.

I know you live in upside down land but that is a bloody big cherry dandling down for anyone interested in making a shilling from it. The EU has not offered the same to anyone outside of Europe, nor has the USA. What, you suppose India won't look for a slice of that action for fear we will bury them in cheap clothes manufactured in child sweatshops because of the total lack of labour laws in the UK? You reckon other countries won't want to do a deal because of the UK's reputation for churning out goods with poor product safety and a lack of compliance with environmental protection laws?

Come off it.

And you really think the UK will sally forth with it's own nuclear war against some unfortunate country. We only do something big with US blessing and that has always been the case since Suez.

It's not about a unilateral first strike and you know it. You reckon the French would launch on their own?

5 men with a big club is always far more scary than just 1 man with a big club.

France has already built the lorry parks, customs facilities and even the restaurants. Douane have increased in number, many more being trained.
Do you still think the EU will back down?

The French had a full test of their customs system over a year ago in preparation for no withdrawal deal happening. The UK hasn't even specced, let a loan written some of the systems they need. :banghead:

Because they aren't going to bother! Globally, less than 2% of all international freight is subjected to customs checks- there is far too much of it by volume. It relies entirely on intelligence. The only way you can hope to check any volume of freight is by gamma ray backscatter scanning which is a hot topic given the prevalence of human beings trying to get across the channel in wagons. The UK already imports goods from all over the world, it will be another working day for the UK importing stuff. It's Europe who needs to check stuff they don't want to import. I wish them luck. It won't be done and the EU have historically been lame as fudge about border controls.

Japan have you a harder deal than the one you had through EU!
And that was before the “let’s break international agreements”, fiasco!!
No, no, no ..... it’s going to be a hard sell I’m afraid. Then the House of Lords will make it harder!!

For someone who thinks the uk is f**ked and the EU is going to coin it in our irish pal is very vocal about trying to stop brexit, anyone would think he is worried by us going it alone.
