They are fishing for more money. Sell a few loads, then withdraw quotes. Sit tight for a week, then release and few more loads at 20 quid more. If buyers appear, withdraw again and repeat process, presumably until run out of fresh buyers. It's price discovery as they would call it in the financial markets.
What would you advise? Wait till spring?

Will there genuinely be enough fert being produced if energy costs are headed where they're talking this winter?

My merchant thinks yes. I don't know if he's right. Oh, and where are energy costs heading? As far as I see, they are already there.

I don't know the answer to that. I'm only describing what's been happening now, and I doubt any of us are surprised that they might be chancing their arm with a bit of profiteering. It's really only like we do every week at the mart. Price bids up until it runs out of willing bidders.
