Ford 4630 stub axle

Hello,

I recently purchased a 2WD 1995 Ford 4630 which unfortunately has damage to the left hand stub axle and unluckily this part cannot be got from the usual resources.

On the off the chance would anyone here on the forum know where a suitable stub axle would be available or if a stub axle from say the 10 series or 100 series could be modified to suit.

Thank you,
Shane.

0i assume you are talking front , if so repaired one several years ago and have worked on fords since 1975 and thought these were just updated 10ser but not so the parts look the same but i think they are metric as when i went to replace the front hub i found it was different it still; fitted but the inner part of housing was wrong new correct part was stupid money so beware and try to obtain one from 30ser.

Hi forblue,

Thanks for your reply. Yes it is the front I'm talking about.

Whoever had the tractor before hand broke a bearing in the hub and kept driving to which the threads on the spindle are ruined for the hub nut. The nut hardly had a grip when I opened off the hub cap.

I've seen new stub axles for the 4630 for sale in the America but asking near $300, stupid money, so it will be a case I think like yourself and carry out a repair on the existing stub axle.

Neills vintage spares Carlisle or Dungannon could have what you are looking for. 1 or 2 other sellers have bits for them on ebay. Worth having a look and callng them.

Are they not still making them? what is your local NH dealer quoting?

What’s different about the 30 series? Will a 10 or 00 series one not fit? Have you a photo? Is it a straight axle or swept?

If you fit a new bearing kit, good quality grease, set it up and weld the nut on it would be ok for years.

On the face of it they are just like the first 4000 built, but seems the bearings are slightly different

If worst comes to worst, can the OP not slide out a full half axle from any breaker Ford 40xx and fit it? as its probably only the spindles that are different.

Yes he may be able to but until both parts are checked side by side it's a guessing game, parts list different years with changes to axle, i had a problem with the roof fans not listed and last price crazy so i got 2 that would fit but had to make up a sheet metal adapter to make them fit, there are so many different things on these models that really are a different model and should be treated as such.

I've since left the stub axle to a friend of mine who is an engineer and says he should be able to clean up the threads.

It really is a guessing game for parts as I have found out with the drag link and ball joint, also for the left hand side. My local agricultural parts shop ordered in the new link and corresponding joint from the Bepco supplier. The Bepco parts are 1/2" whereas the parts I have are 15/16". Looking into it only Sparex seem to make the 15/16" ball joint but no luck on the drag link so far.

Talking to a Ford/New Holland mechanic he said the 4630 and related models front axle changed at some stage after the buy over from Fiat so really it is a case of comparing parts side by side.

Gents, thank you for all your advise and input on the stub axle.

I eventually located a new old stock stub axle and as is always the way, was located right in front of me. Only 10 miles away.

Anyway this is the tractor in question in the photograph doing the primary job it was purchased for to transport firewood. Then the timber is split with a Ford 3600 with a log splitter attached.

Again thank you for all the help and input.
