I think this is the correct tool:

Have one here and only ever used it for CV type stuff. Something on a Kubota RTV somewhere. Impossible without, easy as pie with the right tool.

Make sure the groove is spotlessly clean (blast it out with an air gun) open the circlip and give it a good wriggle whilst pulling on the shaft.
