Would I be mad to buy a Discovery 4

So, to re-ask my previous question, which LR engine is the pick of those currently being fitted?
With the greatest respect, there are always plenty of answers as to which engine will certainly fail and cost a fortune to fix, but positive advice is a bit thin on the ground.

What engine is in the ugly looking range rover that lies away down at the back, one seized locally today I think its less than 3 years old from memory
Evoque [I call it the Evo-Q] or Velar? At less than three years of age the engine will be a version of the ‘new’ Ingenium that is built in the factory off the M54.

2.0 Ingenium what’s the issues ?
Early ones had/have timing chain guide longevity issues and, unique to pre-facelift traverse engine diesel ones fitted to Evoque, Disco Sport and Jaguars, massive DPF regeneration failure and fuel contamination of the lubricating oil issues. This being due to the position of the DPF, remote from the engine, not really an ‘engine fault’.

Current engines are all good and sorted. Until they try and save 2p on some component or other again.

So what you are telling me,
My wife’s 67 plate Evoque, 180, at 36k wants getting rid of,
But then my Discovery 4 on a 15 plate with nearly 100 k , should have been showing big issues as well, ?

yes, this week Disco went into limp mode, after sitting all Xmas unused, but only air sensor off the air intake, £160 quid cure, the only other problem I’ve had in 80k is the gear control knob,
Perhaps I’m one of the Lucy ones, !!

Cant agree - the current 4 pot ingenium derv motor have serious ongoing timing gear longevity issues - under 30,000 miles in some cases.
Built when? Factory build should have been sorted about two years ago. It isn’t the timing gears but the plastic timing chain guides that disintegrate. There are probably a lot of early build low mileage examples yet to fail of course.

It is- the chains are made of rubber and the sprockets fudge.

What is the latest build that you have seen this happen to? As I said, new factory build should have had modified components for at least two years, possibly a bit earlier.

Has this been a problem with newer engines? If so, their modifications to build at that time were not successful.
