Would I be mad to buy a Discovery 4

I see a discovery parked up in a lay by beside us tonight with a bucket below it to catch the oil, think I'd have been getting it pulled further away as there is a trail of oil up the road for 2 miles and it stops at the lay-by

It is disappointing that a major UK car manufacturer has such a bad rep. As ex landrover owners we often notice them broken down on the roadside or on the back of an AA truck. Always think they are well designed yet somehow badly screwed together.

I'd say the design isn't that hot either going by the reputation.

It is one thing for a company to produce a vehicle with a couple of design flaws, but LR knew about these issues very early on and had the chance to put every vehicle right. They categorically did not do this. Instead leaving owners to get fudged and left at the roadside and facing big bills.

It's the same with Ford and their eco-boom engine. Known faults that could have been sorted at their first or second service. You get brand loyalty that way but no, fudge the consumer.

Some LR models you could tell they were assembled by pished off British folk, so many bits and pieces held on by 3 threads on a bolt etc.

To be fair nothing drives like them, I was sad to see our disco go but better half didn't like it and it's her car really
I would agree with that. Last car was a merc ml
300 flogged it around dropped the oil as and when it did over 100k with us bought with 45k on think it was sold with 170 on put a brake calliper on it and an ignition barrel. Brakes tyres was all it had. Got a Range Rover now it’s a different story

What Car? Reliability Survey, the Land Rover Discovery was named the least reliable luxury SUV. Paired with the fact that Land Rover, as a brand, only managed position 31 out of 32 manufacturers, it’s clear that there are some crucial reliability issues with both the make and model of this 4×4 vehicle.

What more is there to say🤪

It is all down to the basic design. Even the poor assembly, which is currently the least of their problems, is down to designers/engineers making it foolproof and as mechanised as possible to assemble. They should also design them to be as simple and time-efficient as possible to repair all components should it ever be necessary after they have designed them to last for decades reliably. JLR fail to jump most hurdles. The only ones they do get right most of the time is to make them perform well, be great to drive and be aesthetically very pleasing and desirable. There are exceptions such as some Jaguar interiors and the arse end of Discovery5.

Without doubt they seem to have many issues but imagine how successful they could be if they managed to combine reliability with desirability. A true British premium brand.....owned by the Indians!!!

They just do not design these things to be reliable and they certainly do not stand by their products but abandon the cost of their ineptitude to the hapless customer who has been silly enough to pay a premium price for their sub-standard product. Been there and got several tee-shirts. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!

Yet I still love their products, but now from afar with a discipline born of experience.

I have a few mates with these defenders the new ones and they appear to be doing well. Some have high milage and have been pretty reliable
